… Ventura County’s best-kept secret

Shhh…if you want to talk about Fillmore, do so quietly. Amid Ventura County’s exploding suburbs, this is one town that hasn’t been attacked by the strip mall brigade.

Tucked away in the Santa Clara River Valley, just below the San Cayetano Mountain peak in the Los Padres National Forest, Fillmore has maintained a small-town feel and a historic downtown worthy of numerous film scenes.

Yet the town’s film appearances haven’t created a Hollywood attitude; Fillmore’s economy remains rooted in agriculture. Citrus and avocado groves and tree and row crop farms make up much of the landscape, and Sespe Creek ambles through.

Here you can enjoy small-town activities, like catching a film at the one-screen theater in the heart of downtown, hitting the green at Elkins Ranch Golf Course, wandering around historic sites like the Fillmore and Western Railway Depot and viewing nearly extinct birds at the one-and-only California Condor Sespe Sanctuary.

Just keep it on the DL.
