However, because the swine flu is more resistant to medicine and is highly contagious, it’s important for people to be aware of how to prevent any type of cold or flu—especially those living in close quarters with many other people, such as apartment renters.

Here are some tips from Hubbuzz on how to stay safe and healthy at your apartment this flu season:

1.) By far the #1 most important and effective way to prevent illness is to wash your hands. And not just after you go to the bathroom, either. Make sure you thoroughly wash your hands after working out at the community fitness center, shooting pool in the clubhouse and using the business center computers, too.

2.) It’s one thing if you want to cover your own apartment in germs, but PLEASE, if you have to cough or sneeze in the hallway, laundry room or any other public areas of your apartment building, make sure you turn your head into your elbow or shoulder! No, it is not sufficient to use your hand to cover your mouth because then you will spread your germs to the next surface you touch (unless, of course, you run straight to a bathroom to scrub your hands ?)

3.) Get a regular flu shot. There is much debate about what time of the season you should have the flu shot administered, but most health professionals agree that getting a flu shot is a solid step towards preventing illness. Go one step further and work with your apartment manager to organize a flu shot clinic at the community to encourage your neighbors to get one, too.

4.) If you live with roommates, make sure you all pitch in to clean your apartment at least weekly. Wipe down kitchen and bathroom counters with an anti-bacterial cleaner and a clean sponge and/or paper towel. Also, regular vacuuming and sweeping cuts down on dirt particles that can aggravate allergies (which cause sneezing and germs).

If you still get sick this fall, do your best to stay at home so you don’t infect your neighbors and/or co-workers! Don’t use the community amenities during your down time, including the fitness center, hot tub or TV/game room, and make sure to wash your bedding and toss your toothbrush once you’re back on your feet again.

And, if you're really worried about getting H1N1, maybe you should invest in a neat face mask like the one in this picture haha.

You can find more information about swine flu on the Center for Disease Control website.

One is YardSaleTreasureMap.com which lets you enter an address, search radius and day of the week to generate a list and a map of local yard sales taking place around Tucson that day. The listings are pulled from craigslist ads and not only show the location of the sale but also details about what sort of items will be up for grabs.

If you have recently moved into a new house or apartment in Tucson and need some new furnishings this could be a very helpful tool that will save you time and money. And if you’re not familiar with Tucson, don’t worry, the site helps you map a route and lets you print directions so you don’t get lost.

Another great site is MapMyFitness.com which has a ton of fitness tools, including articles from popular fitness magazines, local running paths, fitness plans, and a ton of other cool tools for fitness buffs.

This tool would be especially helpful for someone who has just moved to a new Tucson neighborhood and needs to create a new fitness routine, or even for someone who travels a lot and needs to change their routine often for different locations.

You can also hook up with other members to join fitness groups in Tucson on the ‘community’ tab. There are so many links and resources on this site that you could spend hours browsing and planning. The Loft could be summed up by The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Here you will see some of the greatest films of all time, and some of the worst – but we still love the worst ones, right?

When the bar scene gets old, which is quickly does, catch a Cult Classic screening every Friday at 10:00p (think Monty Python and the holy Grail, Pulp Fiction, The Big Lebowski, et al). Seeing you’re old favorites on the big screen and on the cheap (only $5) is a no brainer.

Other themed nights include B-movies screenings on Mondo Monday – with films like Wrestling Women vs. The Aztec Ape. They might not be the greatest movies, but opportunities for laughs and ‘masterpiece theatre’ type comments abound.

The Loft hosts special screenings classic films along with meet and greets of their stars and directors. On September 8th, at 7pm, see Lust In The Dust, a classic western parody starring Tab Hunter – and meet the star.

Check the website for free movie screenings and movie marathons too.

The Loft Cinema serves your typical movie snacks, beer, wine and some unusual treats like vegan cookies (trust me, vegan does not = flavorless). Every month a beer is featured at a great value. In October the beer of the month was Brother Thelonious Belgian Ale – delish! – and for only $3. They also have Nimbus in the bottle, PBR, Negro Modelo, Fat Tire and other favorites.
Reid Dog Park in Midtown Tucson

Reid Park [where: 3101 E 22nd St., Tucson, AZ 85713] has all kinds of loveliness to commend it. But the dogs living in the Midtown Tucson neighborhood certainly love it best because they can roam around leash-free, which is what most dogs do best.

If you've never taken your pup to a leash-free area, here are some tips to get you ready:
1. Bring something to pick up after your dog. The only good dog park is a clean dog park.
2. Keep an eye on your pooch. You will no doubt meet people who love to talk about dogs and the conversations can build into very nice friendships. But if you've got a bully on your hands, you need to control him or her. And if your baby is being bullied, you're the one that has to go to the rescue.

The easiest dog to take to a park is one who comes when called. I have a dog who comes when called at home, but is deaf at the dog park. So in case your dog develops the same affliction, be ready for pursuit – occasionally it's the only way to get him leashed back up again for the trip home. (It can count as your daily workout!)

If you're looking for an apartment near Reid Park, Cottonwood Creek Apartments and Cordova Village Apartments are both in the neighborhood and both allow pets. Casa de Sherry Apartments and Country Gardens Apartments are a few blocks north and they are also pet-friendly apartment communities. You can find these listings and more on www.hubbuzz.com. Start your apartment search here and just select "dogs allowed" when you're perusing and choosing amenities.
In fact, most bees are pretty important members of the agricultural and horticultural community. But there are some situations where bees are not your friends.

If you see a structure about the size of a large cup (could be as big as a Slurpee cup) that looks a little like a sprayed cone of cardboard or paper, and it hums or seems to vibrate, you may be seeing a hive. And if the hive belongs to Africanized honey bees, they can represent a threat to you, your family or your pets.

Most Tucson apartments have good maintenance crews that keep an eye out for hives. But that doesn’t mean they have x-ray eyes. If you notice a lot of bee activity, or you hear bees buzzing in a specific area, stay away from that area and call the City of Tucson Neighborhood Resources number at 792-CITY (792-2489).
