…landscapes that breed contentment

Up until recently, if you were to mention Sentinel Peak (the one marked with the big “A,” courtesy of the University of Arizona) to a Tucson resident, you’d probably be met with a nostalgic sigh or sparkly eye. But since a recent city ordinance has forced this popular, high-altitude “parking” spot to close at 8 p.m., there’s a little less love on the West Side.

Alas, the foothills of Tucson are still a great place to be, nighttime police barricade or not. West of I-10, the Saguaro National Park (giant cacti as far as the eye can see) and surrounding areas offer panoramic city and sunset views, as well as hiking trails, the occasional Indian petroglyph and a Mission. The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, an arthropod institute and the International Wildlife Museum showcase the colorful diversity of desert life.

With such beauty, it’s no surprise that golf courses, resorts and touristy attractions have popped up throughout the area, including the Old Tucson Studios and the Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa.

And who knows? Maybe love on the West Side can be found among the bunkers and sand traps.
