…quiet, historic district in the middle of town

Legend has it that Sam Hughes, after striking it rich during the Gold Rush, contracted TB and settled in this area in 1858 to spend his last days in peace. Yet there must be something good in the cacti, because he lived 59 additional years and in that time, helped incorporate Tucson, fight against the Apache tribe and eventually establish public education in the town.

That’s how Sam Hughes became a local hero, earning a ‘hood that bears his name and is officially recognized as a “National Historic District.” Located smack in the middle of the city, Sam Hughes (the area, not the man) is one of Tucson’s quieter, more-attractive central-city areas.

Many of the residents here are long-timers, who love the central location, excellent schools and services. Adjacent to the University of Arizona, it has bike routes and walking paths galore, plus tons of shops to browse through.

And if the legend is true, we predict a long, healthy life ahead for you.
