…tired old community, or hip, interesting, ‘hood?

Gather ‘round, hubbuzz readers; it’s storytime!

Two birds are looking at an autumn leaf. One bird stands in a tree, seeing the leaf from above, while the other bird is on the ground, watching it from below. Because the leaves are changing color, the leaf in question is red on top and green on the bottom, causing the birds to argue about what the color really is—that is, until the leaf falls to the ground, flipping over and over in the air on its descent. The birds discover that each of them, in fact, was correct.

Such is the case with Midtown Tucson. Speedway Boulevard, its main east-west thoroughfare, was voted both the “ugliest street in America” by Life magazine and the “Street of the Year” by Arizona Highways, and offers a direct testament to the idea that beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.

Also, as one of the oldest parts of Tucson, Midtown offers historic 19th-century buildings, (part of the University of Arizona), as well as the Broadway Village shopping center, which was designed and built in the 1930s by the locally-famous architect Josias Joesler. Whether these buildings are relics or treasures is for you to decide.

One near-indisputable amenity is Reid Park. With the zoo and Hi Corbett Field within its limits, we feel it’s an empirically positive addition to the neighborhood.

But then again, you might think that zoos are for the birds.
