…an historic, happenin’ hood

Whether you’re looking to check out a few art galleries, grab an authentic southwestern bite to eat, or simply hang with people of all kinds—young, old, native, tourist—check out the most varied, walkable ‘hood in Tucson: Downtown.

But before you go, you’ve got to understand that this area is undergoing a revitalization. Development started ten years ago, and is happening slowly but steadily.

So even with 100-year-old adobe homes, Victorian mansions, restored old-style Spanish homes and cute bed-and-breakfasts, there are sections of downtown that might seem a little um…in-progress. The Old Town Artisans marketplace is just a block north of the art museum—right by where the IMAX theater, aquarium, science and cultural center will be. The Tucson Convention Center, along with the Temple of Music and Art, stands near where the Rio Nuevo, a large retail/community center, will be.

The Barrio Histórico District (sometimes called Barrio Libre or Barrio Viejo), with its strong Mexican roots, adds authentic flavor and charm. Although the downtown revisioning is a slow process, there’s more than enough history here to keep you occupied. The historic buildings are gorgeous, and all day, El Charro Restaurant whips up a mean plate of huevos.

While you’re here, stop by El Tiradito (the Barrio’s famous shrine) and make a wish for your next great living space (while you’re there, maybe say a prayer for the completion of the Rio Nuevo).
