We all need a trip to Florence in our lives... but if your budget doesn't have Italy in it's future, then head on over to A Taste of Florence on Grand Avenue in downtown Escondido.
We're talking seriously good Italian food and with my strong Italian roots, I know good Italian food when I eat it. With reasonable prices on pasta, pizza, beer and wine you are sure to find your dining experience pleasurable and full of Italian flavor.
If you make it to A Taste of Florence on a Wednesday, they offer half price bottles of wine... perfect for someone who is saving up for their trip to Italy.
So it might have some strong characteristics of a suburb but when you stumble across restaurants like Johnny B’s (on 4th) you can be thankful for the jewels.

I like Johnny B’s – they serve up delicious all-American burgers, fries and beers (15 on tap folks). When you come be prepared for a wait – when the food is this good it takes time. Enjoy a beer instead and some company with friends. Don’t forget the cash because they don’t take cards (which may seem odd in today’s world, but what are ya gonna do?).
Starting this week, all apartments and condos with 100 units or more, single-family homes served by private recycling companies, commercial buildings with more than 20,000 square feet and events that require a permit from the city must provide recycling for plastic and glass bottles and jars, paper, newspapers, metal containers and cardboard.

The city’s goal is to increase recycling by 100,000 tons a year, reuse or recycle at least 50 percent of the city's waste stream and save space in Miramar Landfill who’s close date of 2013 is nearing. (If you can believe it, about two-thirds of the trash at that landfill is recyclable! And it is just chillin' in a landfill at the moment.)

The new San Diego recycling rules will affect 175 apartments. The city is ramping up to 2010, which at that point, the recycling ordinance will apply to all homes and businesses in the city with some exceptions.

Now, landlords are responsible for providing a place to recycle - so make sure your complex complies (if you have more than 100 units). We, the tenants, are still responsible for taking advantage of this new ordinance - so don’t dump recyclables in the trash!

Museum Month in San Diego

The San Diego Museum Council recently partnered with Macy's department stores to bring the joy of local culture to all San Diegans.
It's hard to find cheap eats without going to a generic drive thru. but this place offers good food for $1 - $20 per person (obviously depending on how hungry you are). Another perk is that the people watching here is much more interesting.

Normally packed full around lunch time, tables are squeezed in under giant screen TV's and autographed sports jerseys. Stop by after class for happy hour, too. 4.0 Deli serves up classy college beers like Nati Light and Bud. I don't recommend having too many of those with your prof though--never turns out good!

One wise word of advice: Parking is nearly impossible here. Best to walk, ride a bike, rollerblade, skateboard, float or hop on a Razr or Segway instead. Unless your cool with putting your rent money towards boot removal, which defeats the purpose of cheap eats.

Clarence Good was hanging kitchen cabinets in an apartment unit when a neighbor burst in pleading for his help. Good immediately went to the apartment where the husband was threatening his family with a knife.

A different neighbor was able to grab the youngest child from the father and yet another neighborhood grabbed some pepper spray from her apartment which used to help the older child escape. Good then fought the father, tackled him in a parking lot and received numerous knife wounds. In the end the father turned the knife on himself and died.

All the apartment dwellers who were there that day are heroes too.
It appears that the luxury hotel quotient represents a heavy weight in determining the list. As one commenter pointed out:

"I'm disappointed that the NY Times seems to have centered this piece on luxury hotels; it reads more like a boring advertisement section from an airplane magazine than Times-caliber travel journalism.

These choices seem to have more to do with the opening of luxury hotels than the interesting cultures or natural settings that make travel actually interesting."

But you got to rest your head somewhere, I suppose.

San Diego made the list at #44 and the reason being the opening of the Hard Rock Hotel [where: 207 Fifth Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101] and because Virgin Airlines will fly here. Perhaps the real reason should be simple that San Diego is ‘America’s Finest City’ and we’ve had a hard year and could really use that tourist money.

Here are the other American cities chosen, and why:

#5 and #6
Mid-beach and South Beach, Miami, Florida
Why: Sparkling new resorts

#8
Death Valley, California - Nevada
Why: Rain showers bring 1000s of May flowers

It's December and I still have Halloween pumpkins rotting on my tiny balcony.

This is the first year I haven't been able to decorate for the holidays due to two reasons: 1-lack of space and 2-lack of extra funds. I love festive decor, but my apartment isn't exactly fit for a Christmas tree, and I don't have a fireplace-let alone a mantle-to hang stockings on. What's a renter to do?! Well, I did what I always do when I need creative ideas. I turned to my good friend Google. And what did I find? A website dedicated to helping renters decorate their small spaces on a budget.

The site is called Rental Decorating Digest and provides a plethora of articles about how to make small spaces seem bigger, how to incorporate feng shui into oddly shaped rooms, and how to decorate for the holidays on a budget.

After all, an apartment is still a home no matter how small it is, why not decorate it like one?

The Next Big Thing

The Victory of Reason will be playing at the Epicenter in Mira Mesa on December 8th along side 40 or so other local bands. Meanwhile, the kids are helping the canyon continue to provide health and nature to the community.

Sponsored by San Diego State University’s Institute for Public Health, the Student Team Empowerment Program (STEP), which offers academic assistance to middle school children, has joined forces with canyon volunteers to provide environmental education to these challenged inner-city students. STEP meets at least weekly San Diego Youth and Community Services in Golden Hill for guided recreation, tutoring and lessons in decision-making.

The 32nd Street Canyon is a tributary to Chollas Creek between Cedar and C streets on the north and south, and 32nd and 33rd streets on the east and west.

Canyons provides oxygen and cool air for the neighborhood because grassy areas are cooler than cement. Generally, however, poorer neighborhoods are unable to care for their canyons, resulting in trash and a lack of plant growth. Volunteers have replaced 1,000 plants in the 32nd Street canyon to encourage regrowth. This winter, fourth graders from the Einstein Academy public charter school in South Park will join the effort. STEP teenagers will also be there, planting shrubs, grasses and trees.

Recent studies, including California’s Closing the Achievement Gap in 2002, have shown environment-based education improves students’ learning abilities and achievements. The canyon project is just one part of the STEP program, which matches middle-schoolers with SDSU students for mentoring. SDSU is monitoring the progress of STEP participants from 2006-2009 to see how the program benefits these students, who are referred by counselors as requiring academic assistance.
