University City

…Which side of the canyon are you?

Referred to by some locals as “East La Jolla”, the official name of this locale is University City. Settled in the 1800s, University City is best known these days as the home of UC San Diego and financial institutions like Wells Fargo.

Divided through its center by Rose Canyon, the north end of University City is a mix of high-rise office buildings and condo/apartment complexes, and is home to a younger and diverse population. Hence, look for lots of artsy galleries, shops and coffee houses, as well as good public transportation (the area is well served by buses).

South of Rose Canyon is older and more established. Diversity is not a strong point here, and most residents are quiet, dependable homeowners who prefer cursive numbers above their doors to Greek letters.

Besides the hard-charging bankers, the life of University City is without a doubt the UCSD students. Though there are the ever-present surrounding mesas and canyons (like any good inland SD neighborhood should have), University City manages to promote a younger and livelier vibe than might be expected in an area defined by intersecting freeways.
