An historic storefront in the 2700 block of Adams Avenue welcomed two new businesses recently that while not next to each are related by a hair. Make that a head of hair.
Dennis Souza opened his Souza Hair Color and Design Center (2707 Adams Ave, San Diego, CA, 92116) three months ago. In September, his client, Carter Bowman, launched Ecklectika, a furniture and accessories store, two doors down (2701 Adams Ave, San Diego, CA, 92116) with his business partner, Shirley Coburn.
Bowman and Coburn, a real estate agent, took a few months to renovate the former photography shop by removing a wall and painting the walls and floors. Then they filled the open room with furniture and accessories, most of which Bowman had inherited. Collectibles, including large pieces of furniture, porcelain, mirrors, lamps and candles, give the shop a homey feel.
Bowman, who grew up nearby and attended Garfield Elementary, plans to use the space not only as a furnishings and consignment store but also as his studio for interior design, floral design and custom draperies and upholstery — all of which he does himself.
Dennis Souza is a happy recipient of Bowman’s designing talent. Bowman made the dramatic chenille brocade draperies in Souza’s renovated salon, which exudes luxury in an intimate setting. It feels like a little Parisian spot.
Souza, a stylist for 30 years, took over the salon’s lease from his business partner, Robert Bonneau, who had to leave due to health problems. Souza did a total remodel, incorporating help from friends like Bowman and Souza’s other designer clients. Now he says he’s ready to add a stylist to his two-station shop. He has styled Barbra Streisand and Oprah Winfrey — who knows who might stop by looking for a cut and color?
