San Carlos and Lake Murray

…as suburban as suburban gets

In an area many locals call “East County,” your typical two-car-garage house sits just far away enough from the quiet, tree-lined street to allow a good-sized yard. Patrick Henry High School is part of the huge and diverse San Diego Unified School District, which just celebrated its 150th anniversary. And the highest point in San Diego—Cowles Mountain—looms from your feet to the sky.

So perhaps it’s a little more beautiful than typical, as popular Cowles Mountain offers miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails, affording views of Mexico and the ocean on a clear day. Maybe the Mission Trails Regional Park, which includes the Old Mission Dam and Lake Murray, is pretty impressive because it’s the largest of its kind—seven times larger than Central Park.

Then again, there’s always more than meets the eye in suburbia. It’s just a matter of finding it.
