I’m always on the lookout for a new watering hole or place for a nosh, and I found one the other day. Actually, I’ve been watching this place, Ritual Tavern, evolve for months after the owners took over the divey Mailo’s at 30th and Polk. I mean, I did eat at Mailo’s and it was tasty and cheap, but you have to admit the ambience left a little (okay, a lot!) to be desired.
If you ever were in Mailo’s, and even if you weren’t, you’ll be impressed with Ritual Tavern. The owners, husband and wife Mike Flores and Staci Wilkins, are going for an “old world” kind of theme with darker woods, a big chandelier in the entryway and even a deer’s head. Not sure how well that last item will go over in PC-conscience North Park, but maybe the delicious and reasonably priced food and drink will persuade a friendly opinion.
The menu holds intriguing, tasty offerings from gumbo to fish and chips to a burger. I had the shrimp appetizer with remoulade and it was spot-on excellent. I can’t wait to go back for a real meal. The tap beers are local and the wine list has unusual vino by the glass and bottle. There is an espresso/cappuccino machine (one of those commercial ones) behind the bar if caffeine is more your speed.
But what I really liked about the place, in addition to the warm environment, was the owners’ commitment to quality ingredients and earth-friendly supplies. They are using all organic produce and grains, and their meats come from Niman Ranch and small farms. Their fryer uses soybean oil, and they’re stocked with recycled paper products and cloth napkins made from natural fibers.
Ritual Tavern is in its soft opening now but I think it will be a real hit once it gets going. Check it out at 4095 30th Street or ritualtavern.com.
