…why people live in this part of the country

The San Diego suburb of Poway could be the model for a typical Southern California town. A little History 101: (1) Padres from a nearby mission set up residence in the 18th century. (2) One hundred years later, settlers came and took over the land and began farming. (3) Following years of optimistic to devastating harvests, (4) cars came along, (5) the nearest metropolis grew and grew, and (6) by the second half of the twentieth century, the small independent town founded by "manifest destiny-ers" admitted it could do a lot better by covering its historic farmlands with (7) seas of housing developments.

Not to say this is a bad thing. Poway also has beautiful ravines and a natural lake that's also a staple of a SoCal suburb, along with safe, quiet streets, a predominantly upper-middle class vibe, quality schools, a mix of large and small retailers, and a yearly calendar filled with family-friendly events all set in a sunny natural setting a short drive from the beach.

No wonder Poway is dubbed the "City in the Country."
