National City

Send to a friend

…where history is catching up to the 21st c.

Close to the Mexican border, National City (the second-oldest city in San Diego) is being given a face-lift while preserving its historic charm. With four restored buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, walking through some parts of this area can be a bit like getting lost in California's past.

Here's an interesting contrast—alongside the old-time Granger Music Hall and Santa Fe Rail Depot is a thriving business sector, propelled by brand-new ventures and projects. The oldest auto mall, the National City Mile of Cars is here, as is the largest naval station on the West Coast.

Even the original downtown core is getting a makeover. Businesses are growing and new facilities built by Southwestern College and San Diego State University are underway, as well as a blocks of creative landscaping.

National City is poised to take on the next century…just as it has the past three.
