For an ambiance that’s both cowboy-country and farmer-friendly, Lakeside is the place.

Just a 30-minute drive east from San Diego, this was the home of once-bustling Lakeside Inn. In its heyday, Californians would travel for miles to visit the area for picnics, boating, auto and horse racing, or to sit quietly by Lindo Lake.

Though the Inn closed long ago, residents still enjoy the rustic, family-oriented, resort-style surroundings of Lakeside. With a 700-acre wildlife sanctuary, the yelp-inducing Rodeo and Western Days Parade and the new Barona Valley Ranch Resort and Casino (ask Kenny Rogers about this one), there isn’t any other community like it in the San Diego area.
