…the New Orleans of the west coast

There are still four gas lamps at the intersection of Market Street and Fifth Avenue in the historic district and heart of downtown San Diego, the Gaslamp District. That’s just about all the history you need to know to enjoy this amazing little enclave.

Development and restoration began here in 1982, creating a tourist destination that boasts the kinds of nooks and crannies usually found in much larger cities. Both locals and tourists love it.

Wide brick sidewalks are made for strolling through a unique selection of cafes, boutiques, bars and theaters. There are music festivals and street fairs all year ‘round. Along with its annual district-wide Taste of Gaslamp, ShamROCK (St. Patrick’s Day) and Street Scene festivals, Gaslamp hosts a Mardi Gras celebration that rivals New Orleans.

Apartments and lofts sit alongside commercial buildings, all built in a variety of eclectic architectural styles including Classical Revival, Spanish Renaissance Revival, Modern, Oriental and Italian Baroque Revival.

If it’s a party you seek, walk on over to Gaslamp.
