Del Mar

…off to the real-estate races

We’re sorry. Del Mar is officially closed.

Yes, you heard right. The residents of this charming, village-styled beach community have decided to halt further development.

Well, okay, the town’s not technically closed. But if you think you’d like to move to Del Mar, drive fast and start saving now, because homes here are expensive and increasingly hard to come by.

Torrey Pines State Reserve—2,000 unspoiled acres, preserved to look as they did before custom-built houses and boutiques came along—borders to the north. But the real attractions of Del Mar are the miles of pristine beaches where you can lie back and watch hot air balloons float over the ocean at sunset.

Summer gets Del Mar moving with the opening of the San Diego County Fair in June, and the famed Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in July. Or just sit on the deck at the Stratford Court Café sipping an Espresso Bean Blast, then stroll to the Powerhouse Community Center with its cool, trellis-covered verandas and perfect views of palms and surf.

Um…you might want to start building that nest egg ASAP!
