However, because the swine flu is more resistant to medicine and is highly contagious, it’s important for people to be aware of how to prevent any type of cold or flu—especially those living in close quarters with many other people, such as apartment renters.

Here are some tips to help you stay safe and healthy at your apartment this flu season:

1.) By far the #1 most important and effective way to prevent illness is to wash your hands. And not just after you go to the bathroom, either. Make sure you thoroughly wash your hands after working out at the community fitness center, shooting pool in the clubhouse, using the business center computers or even just pushing the elevator buttons.

2.) It’s one thing if you want to cover your own apartment in germs, but PLEASE, if you have to cough or sneeze in the hallway, laundry room or any other public areas of your apartment building, make sure you turn your head into your elbow or shoulder! No, it is not sufficient to use your hand to cover your mouth because then you will spread your germs to the next surface you touch (unless, of course, you run straight to a bathroom to scrub your hands ?)

3.) Get a regular flu shot. There is much debate about what time of the season you should have the flu shot administered, but most health professionals agree that getting a flu shot is a solid step towards preventing illness. Go one step further and work with your apartment manager to organize a flu shot clinic at the community to encourage your neighbors to get one, too.

4.) If you live with roommates, make sure you all pitch in to clean your apartment at least weekly. Wipe down kitchen and bathroom counters with an anti-bacterial cleaner and a clean sponge and/or paper towel. Also, regular vacuuming and sweeping cuts down on dirt particles that can aggravate allergies (which cause sneezing and germs).

If you still get sick this fall, do your best to stay at home so you don’t infect your neighbors and/or co-workers! Don’t use the community amenities during your down time, including the fitness center, hot tub or TV/game room, and make sure to wash your bedding and toss your toothbrush once you’re back on your feet again.

And, if you're really worried about getting H1N1, maybe you should invest in a neat face mask like the one in this picture haha.

You can find more information about swine flu on the Center for Disease Control website.

One is YardSaleTreasureMap.com which lets you enter an address, search radius and day of the week to generate a list and a map of local yard sales taking place that day. The listings are pulled from craigslist ads and not only show the location of the sale but also details about what sort of items will be up for grabs.

If you have recently moved into a new house or apartment and need some new furnishings this could be a very helpful tool that will save you time and money. And if you’re not familiar with the area, don’t worry, the site will map a route to take you to all the different yard sales so you don’t get lost.

Another great site is MapMyFitness.com which has a ton of fitness tools, including articles from popular fitness publications, popular local running/walking/cycling routes, fitness plans, and a ton of other cool tools for fitness buffs. This tool would be especially helpful for someone who has moved to a new area and needs to create a new fitness routine to fit into their new neighborhood, or even for someone who travels a lot and needs to change their routine often and in different locations.

You can also hook up with other members to join fitness clubs/groups in your city on the ‘community’ tab. There are so many links and resources on this site that you could spend hours browsing and planning. Related sites include MapMyHike.com, MapMyRide.com and MapMyTri.com.

Tis the Season for Dumpster Diving

If you've ever moved out of an apartment before you are well aware of how the daunting task of hauling boxes around makes you want to get rid of stuff that isn't absolutely necessary. Stuff that you've held on to in the past for no real reason is now rather easy to toss so you don't have to carry another #$@%^& box up the stairs.

As a result of this frustrated behavior some pretty decent stuff can be found in the dumpsters around moving time, especially in alleys behind apartment buildings and college dormitories. Behold the increase in dumpster diving.

Especially these days, it's pretty hard not to stop and have a look-see when you spot a perfectly good entertainment center or patio table discarded by the side of the road. Talk about saving money!

I remember finding a fully-functional laptop in the trash when I moved out of my college dorm after freshman year. A LAPTOP! Also, when I moved into a house off-campus my senior year I picked up a bright blue dresser and hauled it up to my room. All of it's drawers were missing, but with the addition of some cheap plywood it made a fabulous (and bright!) bookcase that could have easily been mistaken for a true vintage treasure.

Here are a few tips before for amateur dumpster divers:

1.) I would suggest wearing rubber cleaning gloves if you plan to get really down and dirty. You can find some unpleasant things, so the gloves will really help with the icky factor.

2.) There is no best time of the day for dumpster diving! Unlike garage and estate sales, you don't have to arrive at the crack of dawn to get the best selection. Often it's early afternoon that you will find the best stuff.

3.) Have an open mind. Most things can be refurbished or remade into something spectacular with a little elbow grease. And lots of things can be used for something completely unrelated to what it was originally intended for. Think outside the trash bin :)

4.) If you find anything living, like a puppy, kitten or, God forbid, a baby, please for the sake of humanity do the right thing take it to a safe place! At least notify some kind of authority figure.

So why not pinch your nose and take a stoll/bike ride/drive around town this weekend...you never know what pieces you'll find that would make a great addition to your home. You might not need anything inparticular, but since it is free, you might as well pick something up, even if you end up putting it back in the trash outside your home for another lucky dumpster diver to discover.

FYI Here is the "official" definition of dumpster diving from wikipedia.com:

Dumpster diving is the practice of sifting through commercial or residential trash to find items that have been discarded by their owners, but which may be useful to the dumpster diver. The practice of Dumpster diving is also known variously as urban foraging, curb shopping, binning, alley surfing, aggressive recycling, Curbing, D-mart, Dumpstering, garbaging, garbage picking, garbage gleaning, dumpster-raiding, dump-weaseling, tatting, trash picking, treasure hunting, skally-wagging, skipping, or trashing.

Redlands Market Night has Food and Fun for the Whole Family

Want to freshen up your Thursday night and your weekend meal plan? As a side note, Ben Harper’s parents founded the Folk Music Center in 1958 and now you know where Harper gets his touch.
This mall has a little something for everyone and devoted shoppers from all over the Inland Empire head here to pass a rainy day or stock up on their favorite fashions.

Three major department stores anchor this mall - JC Penney, Macy's and Nordstrom. And in between are shoe stores galore, children's apparel, women's stores like Forever 21, Ann Taylor and stores for guys and gals alike - Guess, Abercrombie & Fitch, and the Gap. Housewares, jewelry stores and sports stores round out the selction.

My personal fave: Nordstrom. It's one of those stores that always offers a unique find for yourself or someone else.

So check out the Galleria at Tyler Mall and shop til you drop!

Where is a good Happy Hour in Redlands

I just moved to the area and am curious where a good happy hour spot in Redlands is? I looked on citysearch and they had no information for Redlands. I would love a local opinion.

A Google search yielded a couple spots - but I don't know if they are any good:

Mikan Teppen Sushi Lounge
[where: 345 W. Pearl Ave, Redlands, CA 92374]
909-798-6300
Happy Hour
Monday-Friday, 4pm-7pm

The Boileroom
[where: 345 Fifth Street, Redlands, CA 92373]
909-792-8855
Happy Hour
Daily
4 pm - 7 pm

I read about three other places that sounded like good nightlife spots: Taylors Cocktail Lounge, Flamingo and Vault Martini Bar & Grill. Are these any good? If you are in the know, you call the university UCR for short. UCR is the most ethnically and economically diverse of all the 10 UC campuses. The campus is located 3 miles east of downtown Riverside and has 81 majors and 52 minors to offer. The school is an average size – about 15,000 undergrads and 2,000 graduate students. UCR has a strong sense of community, a beautiful campus with 40-acres of unique plant-life, four miles of walking trails, small class sizes and is close to everything. See where UCR is located in relation to popular bars and restaurants, fitness centers and cultural attractions. University of California – Riverside is the white pin point on the east side of downtown. Check out the Riverside neighborhood map here.

Where to live?
It is said that about half of students live off-campus. Check out Riverside Apartments – to search for your future digs. Hubbuzz.com has about 20 apartments to choose from. See where these apartments are located in relation to campus, and all the hotspots on the maps tab.

Where to study?
Let’s face it – you’re at college to get an education right? Then finding a place to study is key. There’s always the main library on campus, but we suggest Back to the Grind. It’s a great little independent gourmet coffee shop. It’s a great place to study and well…be seen and hang out with friends (that’s the other reason you love college, right?)

Where to get away from the books!
With all that hard work, you’re going to need a break. May we suggest the Getaway Café for starters. It is a campus favorite as it is open late, has bar games, a plethora of food and drink options and has outside seating.

If your in the mood to break free of campus, and want to enjoy a fresh brew, head to Riverside Brewing Company. With fresh brewed beers on tap and delish food, you can’t go wrong here. They have everything from wood-fired pizza to burgers and steaks.

If you are feeling a little sassier, we suggest Club Sevilla. Dance your heart out at a free Salsa lesson on Thursday night (we thought you’d like that). They’ve got drink specials and dance parties on a nightly.

Let’s not forget we are in Southern California here. Within a short drive you can also reach, shopping at Tyler Mall, surfing, and major attractions such as Anaheim Stadium, Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm and the Staples Center.

What’s not to love about this place?
