Riverside is known as “the birthplace of the citrus industry,” a town where, in the late 1870s, the local discovery of Brazilian navel oranges created a kind of orange Gold Rush. By 1895, this city was the wealthiest in the nation per capita, and nearly 250,000 orange trees lined the landscape.

These days, many groves have been replaced by some of the 300,000 residents, all of whom contribute to a kind of suburban sprawl with a diversified, urban atmosphere. Yet Riverside still remembers its agricultural history. The University of California – Riverside has 40 acres of unique plant-life and four miles of walking trails. The Parent Navel Orange Tree, from which all American West Coast navel orange trees descend (kind of like the citrus equivalent of the Great Pumpkin), is located here. Fairmount Park is home to several species of birds, and has a large pond.

As a major city within the Inland Empire, Riverside also offers great schools, good neighborhoods and a plenty of housing options including apartments rentals. Orange you glad we told you about it? (Sorry…we couldn’t resist.)
