…ranch town turned high-speed city

If the names Spritle and Chim-Chim mean anything to you, you already know a thing or two about Fontana.

If not, here’s the deal: home to fictional character Speed Racer, Fontana is a huge destination for stock car auto racing, better known as NASCAR. The Auto Club Speedway plays host to several racing events each year, and on a smaller scale, the Fontana Drag Strip plays a part in the history of the NHRA (that’s National Hot Rod Association) circuit.

But Fontana isn’t just for gearheads. Once a town of citrus orchards and ranches, Fontana grew into a steel city during WWII with the construction of the Kaiser Steel Mill (cinephiles: Terminator 2 in the abandoned mill), and soon exploded to its current population of approximately 180,000.

A hot location off freeways I-15 and I-10, only ten minutes from Ontario International—or two minutes if you’re driving the Mach 5—ensures continued population growth, and good amenities (some great Latin American cooking, too).

For a more affluent taste of the town, head to the northwest side; for a more affordable community and a more diverse population, turn south.

Just watch out for demons on wheels.
