…now this is beach living

Yes, the sunsets here are to die for. And the sand and surf’s not bad, either.

Take any of the streets between 5th and 24th or turn west at the stoplight on Broadway and you’ll hit beach. This 1.2-mile-long community along the Pacific Coast Highway is a mellow place, to be sure. There’s no residential mail delivery here, so a quaint post office in the center of town serves as a mail pick-up point and a spot for locals to chat.

Despite the low key attitude, Sunset Beach is attracting celebrities in search of stores and galleries they may not find in neighboring LA. And the town’s restaurants and clubs are turning things up a notch or two, serving a healthy diet of R&B, rock and acoustics.
Among the special events here are a locally organized weekend art festival, a “mile-long” garage sale and a chili cook-off. Not to be missed: the renovated water tower house, a well-known landmark that can be rented by the month. Beware—it’s expensive, but worth it.
