Seal Beach

Send to a friend

…historic and laid-back

Seal Beach locals are proud of this community’s former tough-guy image, complete with gambling parlors and other diversions of the Roaring Twenties. It adds character to a quiet, old-fashioned town that’s still growing.

Today, Seal Beach depends on the local U.S. Naval Weapons Station for economic security, which can make parts of the coast here seem a little desolate. The nearby Boeing Company also contributes to the employment numbers.

Traditions like The Lions Club pancake breakfast and their Fish Fry continue to this day. The municipal pier, the second largest in California, is a favorite spot for fishing. The town is also home to the Bay Theatre, a popular venue for independent film and revival screenings.

Birdwatchers, take note: the 911-acre Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge is located on part of the Naval Weapons Station, thus limiting access to monthly tours. And yes, the seals really do love the beaches here…just follow the crowds of gaping tourists to catch your own glimpse of nature’s show.
