Los Alamitos

Send to a friend

…military buffs and green activists welcome

The cottonwood trees are plentiful here, but it’s the nearby military training base, housing units of the Army, Navy, National Guard, and Marines, that take up much of Los Alamitos—48 percent of the city’s 4.3 square miles, in fact.

Don’t let it fool you. Beyond the military veneer, Los Alamitos is a friendly and forward-thinking place. City leaders invested $4.65 million to preserve a 4.25-acre site as a park, and a once-dilapidated pool was transformed into a world-class water polo training center.

Sure, there are a few strip malls. But the things that make Los Al a desirable place—a top-notch police force, great schools, innovative city government, an enthusiastic chamber of commerce and a horse race track—cancel out any negatives.

And just in case you’re looking, many of the neighborhood streets here are named after World War II aircraft carriers.
