If there is one thing Laguna Hills is known for it’s Nellie Gail Ranch, an ungated, upscale community with a ranch-like, equestrian setting.

With sprawling lots sitting on a hill in the center of town, residents prefer riding horses through the streets to driving the OC-standard BMWs. This has led to a healthy stream of jokes from their neighbors, but Nellie Gailians claim they want to present a more down-home, less-flashy and commercial lifestyle than other premier communities like Beverly Hills and Newport Beach.

The rest of Laguna Hills is what you’d expect from a non-coastal OC city—developments with gate-worthy names, hiking trails over its rolling terrain, and a shopping mall providing the small city with its only real income.

On a more interesting and ironic note, during the construction of a new development in this land-locked ‘hood, builders actually stumbled upon a fossilized coral reef. If you find yourself intrigued, then saddle up and head on down to Laguna Hills.
