Practically an entire enterprise of entertainment, the communities of Balboa and Balboa Island provide the OC with some major thrills, silly pastimes and endless seaside tchotchkes.

Located near Newport Beach, Balboa is primarily residential, with quaint (yet often astronomically-priced) homes and a close-knit community.

Balboa’s carefree sibling, Balboa Island, is a 1,000-foot ferry ride away and features the historic Balboa Pavilion, the Balboa Fun Zone, over 70 gift shops and stores, arcades, laser tag, fishing and always more fun around the corner. This is where The Wedge has become world-famous for the intimidating waves that attract beachgoers for surfing, bodysurfing and body boarding. The frozen banana is rumored to have originated here (and it must be true—they cited the legend on Arrested Development.)
