Greased Watermelon Polo…it must be summer. An elbow in the face, a kick in the groin. Just chasing the dream. But, really, you are what now…28 years old? You kinda have a slight advantage over an 8 year old, don’t you think?
Well, if watermelon still represents summer to you, yet you’re no longer socially accepted at your parent’s neighborhood pool (the brawl you started at the snack bar didn’t help), go check out the giant watermelon slices in Cottonwood Glen Park. Sure, they’re made of steel and aren’t covered in Vaseline, but this is art – it’s time to appreciate the finer things in life.
The watermelon slices and 40 other public art pieces are part of Fort Collin’s Art in Public places project. So if you ever wondered about that big red pony at English Ranch Park (stop #4) or the bird houses on Power Trail (stop #38) now is your chance to learn the real deal. Stop # 28 at City Park Pool is a piece called 100 Days of Summer…if only.
Next time you are looking for something to do, print off this handy guide and map and enjoy a public art walking tour.
You may no longer reign over the pool, but you can consider yourself a patron of the arts. And come on, you know you could use the exercise.
The watermelons in the photo above are from artist Christopher Weed's website. These watermelons are from a different commission. Check out Weed's website - he has done a ton of public art work in Colorado.
