…heartbeat of the city

Phillips is a busy and diverse neighborhood with a mix of residential, commercial and industrial areas. The heart of South Minneapolis, it’s a high-traffic neighborhood (home to most of the rush-hour freeway alternatives) and it’s had its ups and downs.

Park and Portland Avenues give you glimpses of Minneapolis upper crust living, 19th-century-style. Amongst the faded glory you’ll find treasures like the American Swedish Institute, which hosts a number of interesting events.

There have been some dramatic improvements in Phillips. The development of the Native-American themed Ancient Traders Market played a big part in the turnaround of East Franklin Avenue, and Minneapolis recently invested $189 million to develop the vibrant Midtown Global Market in what used to be a vacant Sears building. The mixed-use development contains offices, retail and hotel space and residences. And some seriously good ethnic food.

Housing runs the gamut, from vintage, vine-covered apartment buildings to 1970s urban planning efforts, from grand old houses to shiny new condos. You’ll find pockets of artsy houses with funky lawn décor as well as the colorful mosaics of Touchstone Plaza in Peavey Park. Check it out.
