The collapse of the I-35W Mississippi River Bridge in 2007 cut off this fun and friendly artsy community from the rest of the city. But with the opening of the St. Anthony River (35W) Bridge, traffic is moving again.
A converted industrial building now houses about 70 artists’ studios as well as an open-to-the-public café and restaurant. Gallery crawls are making this area a major arts and culture location.
Central Avenue has food from all over the world, fair trade coffee and quirky knick-knacks. Hennepin Ave. offers bars, clubs, markets and boutiques. Check out The Quarry, (more retail), then indulge your palate with pierogies and beer at Nye's Polonaise Room or the awesome Punch Pizza.
Railroad tracks run through, and divide, Northeast's residential/commercial and industrial districts. With its warehouses and factories, the community is primed for new housing opps, and includes everything from single and multifamily housing to Northeast Central apartments in older brick buildings.
Our advice? Get in while you can. Northeast is the it 'hood of the Twin Cities.
