…mounds, munitions and…The Mermaid

Mounds View is a largely residential suburb about 10½ miles northeast of Minneapolis. Its name comes from the gigantic mounds of sand and gravel in the area that you could see from almost anywhere in town. The mounds are almost gone today, eroded away by the elements and the appetite of the (now inactive) Twin Cities Army Ammunitions Plant, but the name lives on…

Mounds View is a very residential town with everything from homes on large, wooded lots to recently-built apartments. Many businesses and office parks are located along the Highway 10 corridor, as well as entertainment options ranging from a multiplex movie theater to the locally-legendary Mermaid Bowling Alley.

Tucked into the residential areas are lots of parks, and nearby Spring Lake offers fishing, trails and a playground. Fast food and chain restaurants abound, but for something a little more Nordic, head east to North Oaks for some Swedish pumpernickel and Finnish Cinnamon Pulla at Taste of Scandinavia. Love it. You betcha.
