Maplewood is a suburb that hugs the northeast corner of Saint Paul. This ’burb has grown steadily since the 1950s, so you’ll find a range of houses, apartments and vintages here.

Maplewood has a population of about 35,000, but its best-known occupant—and a major employer—is 3M Corporation, without whom we’d still be primitively scribbling notes to ourselves on plain, non-sticky paper. Unimaginable.

Shopping options are mostly found at the Maplewood Mall, and much of the local cuisine is of the national chain and fast-food variety. Downtown Saint Paul is only about 10 minutes away if you’re looking to make some more creative dinner plans.

The city has taken an integrated approach to natural preservation, and in addition to the Maplewood Nature Center you’ll find 14 Neighborhood Preserves ranging five to 46 acres in size throughout town.
