...from the edge

Until the mid-1970s, Eden Prairie was a pastoral village on the southwestern edge of the Twin Cites area. Now it’s what’s known as an “edge city,” an area that has gone from semi-rural to concentrated suburb in less than 30 years.

With over 2,200 businesses and three technical colleges here, it’s easy to see why this became such a popular place. Money magazine dubbed it the 10th best U.S. city in 2006, so you gotta know life’s good here.

Like most communities made up of subdivisions, Eden Prairie has precious few sidewalks, so unless you live near a main drag, you need a car for all your errands. There’s lots of strip-type shopping and eating, and the upscale Eden Prairie Center (a.k.a., mall) is something of a central business district, with many
apartments
 nearby.

The city offers tons of amenities like public beaches and fishing, tennis courts, ball fields and skating rinks. Residents also enjoy over 1,000 acres of parks, with 200 miles of trails, and some 4,500 acres of open
-space wetlands. (Can you say 17 lakes?)

No wonder the Eden Prairie motto is “Live, work, dream.”
