Downtown Minneapolis

Send to a friend

…where east meets west

Downtown Minneapolis covers both sides of the proverbial tracks. Downtown East, as locals call it, is super industrial, with apartment rentals, loft residences and museums creeping into the area, while Downtown West is the more typical downtown – flush with high-rise buildings and Minneapolis’s signature skyway pedestrian system.

At the center of it all is Nicollet Mall, a foot-traffic-and-bus-only spot running south from Washington Ave. Summer months bring everyone out of hibernation to hit the farmers' markets, al fresco dining spots and outdoor concerts. The Mall also plays host to the Minnesota Orchestra – a more than 100-year-old group famed at home and abroad.

Closer to the Mississippi River (on the east side), you’ll find warehouses and factories fresh off loft conversions, along with apartments for rent. Sports fan? Never fear, the Metrodome is a hop, skip and a jump, where you can see Twins baseball and Vikings (NFL) and Univ. of Minnesota Gophers (NCAA) football. If culture is more your thing, check out the Mill City Museum, which pays homage to the flour milling industry that spurred serious economic growth, giving Minneapolis its rise.
