…tater town

Minneapolis may be known as the Mill City but Brooklyn Park is all about agriculture. This ‘hood is known for its 19th century historical farm and the community’s mascot is a potato!

But Brooklyn Park is more than tractors and french fries. It’s also the former home of Jesse Ventura – famed wrestler-turned-politician – who was mayor here for four years before becoming governor of Minnesota.

This residential ‘hood has tons of housing opps, including 70s throwback Brooklyn Park apartments and split-level homes. But, never fear, there are newer places to crash as well.

In Brooklyn Park, it all comes back to the spud. The annual Golden Spud Hunt finds Spud McTater (that would be the mascot) without his lucky charm – the Golden Spud. Weekly clues help residents look for the tater tot’s trinket. The promise of a $1,000 prize helps, too.

If that’s not enough tater talk for you, check out the also-annual Brooklyn Park Tater Daze festival, which, you guessed it, honors that most famous starchy veg. There were, after all, potatoes growing here when the ‘hood was first settled.

With a nod to history, order some hash browns.
