Koreatown has seen a great deal of revitalization since the early 2000s. It sure is the time to get in to one of the many apartments in Koreatown Los Angeles. This ‘hood has character. It’s quite the unique blend of Korean residents from nearby suburbs such as Cerritos and Irvine who sought a more urban environment, immigrants from South Korea who wanted better job opportunities, ‘hipsters who were forced out of other neighborhoods with higher rents that have already gone through the revitalization and of course college students who attend USC and UCLA who moved into the area because of the great nightlife, cheaper rent, great ethnic food and easy to access public transportation.

I love the feeling of spring turning into summer in LA. And with daylight savings happening so early this year, I can already feel myself relaxing like its summer as the days get longer and my evenings incorporate more sun and less darkness.

Baseball season is yet another sign that spring is really here. Who doesn't love watching that first pitch at Dodger's stadium? LA Dodgers Opening Day is just around the corner. On Monday, March 31 the Dodger's stadium in Echo Park will be packed with fans, and the little kids (and big alike) will be smiling with anticipation as they take in the first game of the Dodger's 2008 season. I heard the game is sold out, but I am sure you can find a resell ticket website to score some last minute seats if you are willing to pay the price. Or try Craigslist, I know of friends who have gotten some good deals on this site from folks trying to get rid of a ticket for whatever reason.

Or if you can't score a seat, pack a picnic and head to Echo Park. You can always enjoy the excitement in the air with friends or family and people watch the many fans heading to the stadium. Even if I can't score tickets to LA Dodgers Opening Day, I think I can smell a ballpark hot dog in my future.

Green and Energy Efficient Apartments in Los Angeles

Are you looking for a Green apartment? Moving to LA, I consciously made the decision that I would try my hardest to never let traffic bother me. I know it’s LA. It’s got to be bad, but it can’t be that bad, can it? It can. Believe me.

I think I’ve done a great job at not letting the clutter of the LA freeways affect my overall mood. However, I’ve realized that it is impossible to never let it get to me. I’ll sum it up: the only time I let the traffic actually get to me is when I’m late or in a hurry. Whenever I have to get somewhere in LA, no matter if my final destination is 10 or 50 miles away, I give myself at least one hour.

In an all around unpredictable city, transportation is no different. I drive the same route to work every day. I take my street (36th Place) west to Normandie, go North on Normandie to the 10 West. I take the 10 West all the way to the 405 North and end my journey at Ventura Boulevard. This is an approximate 17 mile drive. On Wednesday afternoon I left at 2:00 p.m. The roads were wide open and I was able to drive at least 70 MPH on both the 10 and the 405. I arrived at work at 2:14 p.m. The next day, Thursday afternoon, I left at 2:15 p.m. to find all the roads cluttered and slow. There was an accident on the 10, and consequently, I was never able to go faster than 40 MPH. The 405 had its usual clutter and was bumper to bumper almost all the way. I did not arrive at work until 3:19. Leaving at approximately the same time, driving the exact same route, it took me an hour and four minutes longer on Thursday than it did on Wednesday!

I was supposed to be at work at 3:00 p.m., and when 2:45 rolled around, I started to lose my patience. I left home with more than enough time to make it to work on time, yet I still managed to be 19 minutes late!!! The very worst part was that there was nothing I could do to remedy my dilemma. I became quite irritable and did not calm down until I realized, after an hour of pain-staking work, that it was not my fault, that there was nothing I could have done differently to fix the problem. But then I remembered that I only gave myself 45 minutes to make it, instead of an hour. If I had left only 15 minutes earlier, I would have only been four minutes late instead of 19.

So that’s my remedy: just give myself an hour.

Coming home from work at 11:00 p.m. usually is not “rush hour”, but two nights out of five last week I ran into gut-wrenching traffic after 11 p.m. There is nothing worse in the entire world than drowning in the endless sea of red that floods the night causeways after a full day’s work. Luckily, LA also has some of the best radio stations in the entire world. The stream of red is definitely the ugliest part of Los Angeles, but with the bad and the ugly inevitably comes the good. There’s just no way around it. Stay tuned for details…

La La Love La Poubelle

I la la love my French neighborhood café because of its dark, cozy, laid back but bustling, crowded but controlled, intimate atmosphere. Read our recap below. If this sounds like a worthwhile adventure, you might want to think about living in a West Hollywood apartment. WeHo = the place to be. You should be here!

Stop #1
Stone Rose Lounge
[where: 8555 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA]

Get your evening started in this see and be seen lounge located in the Sofitel hotel. Sip on a martini and enjoy the patio (pictured above) complete with fire pit. This is a hotel bar, so don’t expect the most bumpin’ scene, plus your evening is just getting underway.

Stop #2 and 3 (optional)
REPUBLIC Restaurant and Lounge
[where: 650 N La Cienega Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90069]

and/or

Area Night Club
[where: 643 N La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90069]

If you have the cash (for bottle service), connections, comely looks or can take waiting in line, these might be stops 1 and 2 for you. If not, you might want to head on up to stop #3

Stop #3
The Belmont
[where: 747 N La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90069]

Ahhhh, a neighborhood bar - actually an upscale neighborhood pub. Excellent food, comfortable décor and friendly faces. This is just what you will need if you decided to stop by Republic or Area.

Stop #4
Stone Fire Pizza Co.
[where: 829 N. La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90069]

An Italian style pizzeria and bar done up LA style. If you haven’t yet grabbed a bite to eat, do so here. But $100 for their special gourmet pizza? Stick with Pizza Margharita!

Stop #5
The Spanish Kitchen
[where: 826 N La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90069]310-659-4794]

This bar closes at 1:00am, so you could end the night here. With a bar crawl done right, you shouldn’t be able to last much longer anyway. Grab a margarita and then go home.

Speaking of home, if you live in a West Hollywood apartment, then you can just walk home (which is safer, easier and don’t have to deal with parking. In West Hollywood you could do a bar crawl every night and still never run our ways to mix and match. Dutton's location is to be redeveloped. It is unsure whether Dutton will open a new store, unfortunately, the competitive pressures of big box stores have resulted in, as Dutton puts it, 'a sober assessment of the realities of the book world.'

The following announcement is from the Dutton’s Brentwood Books website:

It is with profound regret and sorrow that Dutton’s Brentwood Books must announce that it will be closing on April 30, 2008.

As our regular customers and friends well know, the past year for the store has been one of upheaval and turmoil. Hard on the heels of the closure of the Dutton’s Beverly Hills location came word that the Brentwood property had changed ownership, and the new owner, Charles T. Munger, announced plans to redevelop the property. The multiple uncertainties of the bookstore’s future, combined with the encumbrances associated with the closure of the Beverly Hills store have crippled the store’s ability to provide the kind of immediate service and depth of inventory that our customers have come to rightly expect.

It is no secret that the store today is a shadow of its former self. Given our situation as it now stands, the pride we feel in our past achievements, and the vagaries of the current book market, shuttering our doors seems the only realistic solution. It is important to note that Charles Munger has committed to a significant amount of financial support for the difficult process of closing the store, and we appreciate his generosity.

Be assured, especially those of you who have regularly asked, “How are things going at the store,” that every effort has been made to try to sensibly and rationally save this enterprise. Those efforts continued up until last week. It is the uncertainty that has, more than any other factor, led us to this painful decision. It has arrested improvement to the physical property, impacted inventory, and made it impossible for our extraordinary staff to provide the level of service that they are accustomed to giving.

We have been asked if the store will reopen in the proposed new development, or at another site in the area. At present, any plans to reopen or relocate will have to await a real offer in a real situation, combined with a sober assessment of the realities of the book world. That said, we have not said “no” to any future possibility.

The one certainty that we have relied upon for our many years at this location is the honest and dedicated support by this community to the value of books and bookstores in general, and to this one in particular. This is a demonstrable fact, proven repeatedly, and while we openly acknowledge our debt to our customers for their years, and even decades, of support, we further ask for your understanding and forbearance in the extremely difficult months ahead.

Fast, Easy and Delicious Food around USC

One of the perks to living near any college campus is the food. It’s no secret that the majority of college students don’t know how to make their own food, or it could be that they are simply too lazy, but one way or the other, there is always good restaurant food around any college campus, and USC is no different. The best aspect of finding food around USC is the variety. If you’re looking for something quick, easy and relatively unhealthy, there are a plethora of fast food restaurants, ranging from McDonalds and Burger King to Taco Bell, Del Taco, Subway or even Panda Express. All of these fast food restaurants are within walking distance of campus, and any of these options will offer a quick fix for your empty stomach. Panda Express, McDonalds, Del Taco and Subway are also open 24 hours, which can come in especially handy on the all-nighters that inevitably surface every term around finals.

If the typical fast food chains are not your cup of tea, there are many other viable options in the USC area. Sizzler is located right next to the Radisson Hotel and offers a nice variety of sea food and steaks at reasonable prices. If you like Mexican food, you’ve got possibilities at nearly every corner. La Barca [where: 2414 S Vermont Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90007] is the most notorious Mexican food restaurant in the USC area. If you go to La Barca, you cannot miss out on their infamous margaritas. The food is pretty standard Mexican style, ranging from tacos and enchiladas to chimichangas and burritos. Whatever food option you pick at La Barca, you don’t have to worry about quantity of food. Every portion is massive, easily big enough to share. This offers a great option for a cheap meal, as long as you don’t mind sharing with a friend.

Pasta Roma [where: 2827 S Figueroa St, Los Angeles, CA 90007] is the best Italian style cuisine around USC. Pasta Roma’s menu ranges from all types of pasta to sub style sandwiches to freshly baked pizza. All of the food at Pasta Roma is delicious, and even if you close your eyes and point at the menu, it’s hard to go wrong. Another great aspect of Pasta Roma is the fact that they deliver. I’ve never had a delivery from Pasta Roma where my food wasn’t still steaming as I started to dig in.

Every living area has its dark horse in the food industry. Near USC, this dark horse is Eat Street Grill [where: 3031 Figueroa at 31 Street, Los Angeles, CA 90007]. Eat Street, as it is called, is the biggest steal around USC. They serve breakfast all day and the other options on the menu are vast. Their salads are wonderful, their burgers are fantastic, and their chicken fried steak is to die for. Best of all, Eat Street is always cheap. Never expect to pay more than $10 or $12 bucks for a full meal!

The food options are definitely a high point of living in the USC area. No matter what kind of mood you are in, you are guaranteed to find something that will appease your craving!

The Best of Westwood…Navigating UCLA's Off Campus Scene

If you are attending college at UCLA, you are probably already aware of these Westwood gems, but for all you frosh, take notes!
There are several key factors that will make your search for housing around USC much easier.

First of all, before you even start your search, you should establish a price range to narrow your search. Near USC, if you are on a tighter budget, you should be prepared to share a room. Private rooms can be found for as little as $500.00 per month, but these are generally found only in shared homes. If you are looking for a truly private room, studio and one bedroom apartments are available, though both are considerably more expensive than a private bedroom in a shared house. You should be prepared to pay anywhere between $800.00 and $1500.00 for a studio or one bedroom apartment in the USC area.

Once you’ve established your price range, the search becomes much easier because it has been specified. The key to finding great housing around USC involves your friends. Whether you live with friends or not is entirely up to you, but I think friends are a key part of finding successful housing in the USC area. Because there are so few bars and the party scene around USC mainly revolves around the Fraternity ROW and house parties, more often than not you will be walking home at the end of the night. If you live in the same vicinity as the friends you party with, then you can walk home together at the end of the night. Because the USC area is a little bit rough, it is always a good idea to walk with a friend, especially after dark and specifically for women. So, more than any other factor (except money, of course), living near friends is the important factor in a housing search around USC.

Shared housing is the best way to get spacious and affordable housing in the USC area. Look for properties between 28th Street and 32nd Street and also between 36th Street and West 37th Place. Shared housing is a great option because spaces are available for individuals looking for private rooms and also for groups looking for entire houses.

Finally, don’t get frustrated if you haven’t found your perfect match right away. USC is located in the heart of Los Angeles and there is always free space. Keep an open mind, check for shared houses and as many other options as you can, try hard to live near friends, and stay the course! If you follow these simple guidelines, finding housing around USC will almost be as easy as beating the Fighting Irish on the gridiron! Good luck in your search and always remember to FIGHT ON!

Ira Glass is a genius in my book.

Anyway, the story this past Saturday was a replay of one I had missed that aired last summer. The narrator who has broken up with her boyfriend is wallowing (wait – let me capitalize that) WALLOWING in her misery, laying on the living room floor in her pajamas listening to Phil Collins break-up music. (I can picture this, can’t you?) Possibly for days, she’s incapable of forward progress through the pain. This apparently goes on long enough that she decides she has to take action by writing her own break-up song. However, she’s not a song-writer, so she struggles.

As luck would have it she talks to a friend who knows someone who is working on the Phil Collins tour and he/she/it arranges for the narrator to have a 45-minute phone call with Phil Collins – about writing break-up songs. And the story goes on from here – with Phil Collins’ recorded conversation with this woman included in the narrative on NPR.

I have to tell you, I’ve never been a huge Phil Collins fan. Genesis? Pretty okay for pop/rock. His solo career? Very spotty, in my opinion. But this conversation with this woman, about heartbreak, about finding the voice you need to communicate the pain of heartbreak in a song, is truly a winner for him. I actually got to the point where I really liked him – he sounded like an average Joe miserable human being, just like we all are occasionally. (I’m not sure he writes music laying on the living room floor in his pajamas, but he has definitely been miserable – 3 ex-wives kind of miserable.)

Anyway, if you’re a Phil Collins fan (or not), if you’re in the middle of WALLOWING, if you broke up with your girlfriend/boyfriend/other, or if you just want to hear a good story, go to this link and pay the ninety-five cents to download the podcast and listen to this tale of woe, hope and kindness. You owe it to yourself - it will make you smile.

Where is Santa Monica College anyways?
Santa Monica is just outside the city of Los Angeles and is in the LA metro area. Santa Monica College is located right in the heart of this small city. You can see where Santa Monica College is located with relation to popular bars and restaurants, fitness centers, and, of course - the beach! by visiting the maps tab at hubbuzz. Santa Monica College is the white pin point - the one you see sitting just about 10 blocks away from fabulous Main Street. (More on Main Street down the page) Check out the Santa Monica neighborhood map here.

Where to Live
Santa Monica Apartments - duh! Live in the heart of it all, choose from over 20 apartments on hubbuzz - see where these apartments are located in relation to the hotspots by checking out the maps tab on the apartment page.
Brentwood Apartments- Not too far and still really cool. It doesn't have the beach, but it has a lot of quaint shopping and restaurants as well
West LA Apartments- This might be a good option if you don't need to be steps away from the beach, because they might not carry the beach price
Venice Apartments - The neighborhood just on the border to the south

Where to Study
One reason Santa Monica is a great neighborhood for studying is that it is located outside the crazy Los Angeles traffic and nightlife - sure you can get to Sunset Strip, but you don't have to wear earplugs when you are studying for that next test. Choose to soak up some sun and study at the beach or hole up in one of the cute coffee shops in Santa Monica while you hunker down in the books. Either way, Santa Monica College is far enough removed from the crazy LA atmosphere that even mom will believe that you really are going to "the library" at night.

Where to Hang Out
Speaking of, The Library is also the name of great restaurant and bar located on Main Street. Yep - we're back to Main Street in Santa Monica. This is where it's at as far as where you and your friends can be found once the books are closed and you are in need of some relaxation. Between the adorable boutiques, the fun array of restaurants and bars and the smell of the ocean not a few blocks away, you will be sure to find your inner socialite self on Main Street.

So you might not see a gazillion starlets while living in Santa Monica and attending Santa Monica College (then again, maybe you will), you will thoroughly enjoy the combination of beach time, study time and hip nightlife Santa Monica has to offer. And if you are craving a little action on Sunset or just have to visit the Chateaux Marmont - no worries - it's all at your finger tips.

As hubbuzz puts it, Santa Monica is one of the most desirable LA 'hoods to call home.
