Spanish for “beach of the king,” Playa del Rey is located just north of LAX, immediately south of Marina del Rey. Though it got a reputation in the 1970s for being a great surfing spot, most ride-able waves are gone due to a number of rock jetties built to prevent beach erosion. Ah, well...better to have beach than surf, right?

Either way, the quieted surf and location under the airport’s flight path have done their part to prevent overpopulation (and gaudy tourist traps) in the area.

For fun, hike the rolling hills, visit the community’s restaurants and shops, check out gorgeous Spanish-style homes and follow the footbridge between Playa del Rey and the jetties, where beach sights abound (psst: ladies, this is where UCLA and LMU’s crew teams practice on the Ballona Creek channel).
