…hitch your horse, hang your hat and chill

You may think it’s tough to find a sleepy neighborhood within a horseshoe’s toss of LA, but here’s one area that keeps the spirit of the American West alive.

Located in the northwest corner of the San Fernando Valley region, Chatsworth is the former stage for many a western film and TV show. Having remained mostly rural until the 1980s, it’s not unusual to find tumbleweeds, horse-zoned properties or even an actual horse tied to a hitching post outside the Los Toros Mexican Restaurant or Cowboy Palace Saloon.

Not surprisingly, there are a number of ranches located here, some of which were formerly owned by legends like Roy Rogers and Errol Flynn. For those of us who prefer our homes less, um, equine, a good number of single-family ranch homes dot the broad landscape, as well as apartment and condo complexes.

A few strip malls, restaurants and a train station do their part to break the western spell and add a little modernity.
