Winding northward along the side streets, it’s easy to get distracted by modern Brentwood apartment communities, luxe condos, well-kept single-family homes and multi-million dollar estates. Yet as you find yourself inching up the mountains, you’ll eventually realize that the restaurants and shops of the main drag, San Vicente Boulevard, are far behind you.

Brentwood houses some of LA’s wealthiest execs and professionals (Hollywood’s hotlist included). Navigate your way toward the flatter, more affordable side of this ‘hood south of Sunset Boulevard and you’ll find the retail side of life. Sadly, on April 30, 2008, longtime landmark, Dutton’s Brentwood Bookstore, closed. Heralded as one of the “last truly independent bookstores”—it was definitely another great area in which to wander. Alas, you'll have to find somewhere new to get your fix.
