Not sure that makes sense but it’s cute, wholesome and pretty much suburbia. Well if you head into the heart of this ‘hood you’ll come across some neon flashing lights with ROY G BIV in the background. That’s the Rainbow Casino - a throw-back. It can get pretty dark inside…not sure if it’s due to the lighting or the cloud of smoke that lingers a consistent 2 inches from my head.

The drinks are solid – the bloody mary’s are pretty impressive for a casino. The food can be questionable. I mean they do advertise a $1.89 breakfast. Anything for $1.89 must be approached with caution.

At any rate, the Rainbow Casino in Henderson is a great place to gamble when you don’t want to deal with the glitz, glamour and drunken tourists on The Strip.

Catering to the bulk of “The World’s Playground,” Las Vegas Boulevard often finds itself filled with tourist cars, city transit vehicles (CAT buses, The Deuce, etc.), taxi cabs, and mobile advertisement vehicles. Understandably so, those visiting Las Vegas want to take in all they can of the experience which is the Las Vegas Strip. However, after all of the millions of tourists visiting the hotels, there still remain the tens of thousands of people employed by these hotels. Traffic to and from work can prove quite difficult for these hotel/casino employees. In order to accommodate these valued employees, frontage roads like Frank Sinatra Drive and Koval Lane were created. With Frank Sinatra Drive still under construction, Koval Lane serves as the most attractive “Point A to Point B” for non-Strip commuters.

Koval Lane begins at Sands Avenue and continues south until Tropicana Avenue. Before the construction of the Las Vegas Monorail, Koval Lane was a simple “back alley way” that ran behind hotels like Harrahs and The Aladdin (now known as Planet Hollywood). Today, the large columns supporting both the monorail track and its respective trains decorate Koval Lane’s western border. True, the Las Vegas Monorail system caters to those who prefer not to battle northbound/southbound traffic, but Koval Lane is home to large parking structures that cater to both employees of and visitors to the hotels along the eastern side of The Las Vegas Strip.

Considering how high rise condominium developments have been rapidly emerging along Las Vegas Boulevard, Koval Lane helps these residents in their commutes as well. Koval Lane intersects several eastbound/westbound streets like Harmon Ave., Flamingo Road, and Tropicana Avenue. Just north of the MGM Grand are its high rise condominiums, The Residences at MGM. With the term “rush hour” being an irrelevant term with respect to traffic along Las Vegas Boulevard, residents of these high-rise condos are given ample opportunity to commute to their respective destinations without the hassle of Las Vegas Strip congestion. Those also benefiting from Koval Lane’s rear access into the hotels are delivery trucks, which are always in high demand from the hotels and convention centers. Even as Las Vegas tourism is constant, so is the need to accommodate it. Although only one and a half to two miles in length, Koval Lane fulfills the needs of the thousands who entertain the millions in Las Vegas each year.

Al’s Garage at The District of Green Valley Ranch

You don’t have to be a Nascar fan in the Green Valley to love Al’s Garage. I love Al’s Garage for lots of valid reasons…the interior is pretty Nascar retro, the menu is spray painted on the wall, gaming is allowed, the drinks are stiff and the food is ginormous.

Get yourself some cheese fries and chicken strips or just order the nachos – they are a masterpiece. You can’t go wrong with a burger and shoestring fries but do not leave without trying the mud pie…you’ll dream about it later.
Located just a few miles east of Main Street Henderson, Lake Las Vegas is a popular resort/community built by a man made lake. The beautiful and carefully designed resort offers world class hotels like The Ritz-Carlton and Montelago Village Resort as well as renowned golf courses like Reflection Bay and Rainbow Canyon. The entertainment isn’t just limited to hotel guests and golfers. Lake Las Vegas also has several restaurants, stores, gelato parlors, and a “concert on the lake” series throughout the spring and summer. Gaming entertainment is also provided inside the various casinos within Montelago Village and The Ritz-Carlton. The man made lake also offers its visitors a mini cruise ship voyage along the lake. Popular to the celebrities as well, Lake Las Vegas was featured in the 2001 film “America’s Sweethearts” and is also home to former Las Vegas entertainer and singer, Celine Dion.

Over the past few years, access to Lake Las Vegas has become much more convenient due to the U.S. Highway 95/I-215 Bruce Woodbury Beltway interchange at Lake Mead Parkway in Henderson. This interchange facilitates entry not only for those coming from Las Vegas and Northwest Las Vegas, but also for those
coming in from Boulder City and Arizona. Lake Las Vegas is not just a resort built for and dedicated to only visitors and tourists. It also boasts several living communities like Vila di Lago, Bella Fiore, and Mirabella. These communities range from town homes to golf villas. With the previously mentioned opening of the Highway 95/I-215 Beltway interchange, commuters living in Lake Las Vegas have easy access to West Henderson, Downtown Las Vegas, and The Strip. Although
young and isolated from its parent town of Henderson, Lake Las Vegas has quickly become the standard of elegance and prestige for Southern Nevada recreation and entertainment.

Hannah's Neighborhood Bistro in Summerlin, Las Vegas

Ahh just walking in the front door is Zen to me...the first sense to hit you is sight. The restaurant is gorgeous with over-sized paintings, underground glass-covered ponds, sheer silk drapes, deep colors and bamboo accents. As you’re taking in the beauty the scents from the kitchen are making your mouth water. Hannah certainly knows how to cook!

The only problem is trying to decide what to eat when you can choose from sushi, satay, salads and seafood. I asked if I could have a sampler platter of everything and the waiter laughed…I was serious. Don’t worry I did order the family platter as a starter. There was so much to feast my palate on but my favs were the coconut shrimp and the beef & chicken satay…mmm makes me hungry just thinking of them. You can’t go wrong with any of the sushi rolls but definitely order the Orange Ginger Fennel salad it’s pretty much amazing! I had the steamed fish of the day (that I have to say was unbelievable…light and full of flavor) and of course a side of the garlic noodles (that I now dream about)! Yes, I have become a regular.
Surrounded by frontage roads like Oso Blanco and Centennial Parkway, Centennial Center is situated equidistantly from its neighbors to both the east and the west. Centennial Center is also easily accessible from the I-215 Bruce Woodbury Beltway, which stretches along Centennial Center’s north end.

Centennial Center is home to dozens of businesses, including supermarkets, restaurants, and auto malls. The Centennial Auto Mall is rivaled only by its Henderson competitor, the Valley Auto Mall. With popular restaurants like Red Robin, In N’ Out, and Road Runner, Centennial Center accommodates to
hungry shoppers. The mega center is also host to retail chain giants Wal-Mart, Costco, and Sam’s Club. Adding construction-themed favorite Home Depot and
electronics superstore Circuit City to its resume, Centennial Center appears to fulfill the needs of virtually all types of shoppers.

Products, food, and cars aren’t the only things Centennial Hills provides its shoppers. Having exits which are accessible from two of the valley’s expressways makes Centennial Center a popular choice for Northwest Las Vegas residents. Prominent communities like Centennial Hills and Lamplight Estates lie east of U.S. Highway 95 just north of Centennial Center. These neighborhoods are host to community entities like Sunny Springs Park and Centennial Hills Park/YMCA. Similar neighborhoods located west of Centennial Center are Painted Desert
and Lone Mountain. These neighborhoods are home to community entities like Mountain Crest Park and Painted Desert Golf Club. Anticipating this huge growth in the northwest, Centennial High School opened in 1999. Since then, communities have exploded both west and north of Centennial High School, making the necessity of a new high school a near eventuality.

Just south of Centennial Center is Santa Fe Station Hotel and Casino. Santa Fe Station’s recent expansion and movie theater inclusion may be the cause for increased business in Centennial Center, especially for restaurant owners. Santa Fe Station is easily accessible from Centennial Center. U.S. highway 95 provides a “business loop” exit for southbound travelers, which directs them right into Santa Fe Station. Northbound travelers leaving Santa Fe Station can also conveniently access Centennial Center by way of frontage roads off of Ann Road. With convenient access from all sides, Centennial Center is sure to remain Northwest Las Vegas’ industry giant.

Easter Bruch, Vegas Style

I am a huge advocate of breakfast, especially brunch, and especially on holidays. For me, the best part about attending Easter services is the brunch you get to attend afterwards! Whether you're hoping to keep it casual or find something fancy, there is no shortage of options to make your taste buds happy in Las Vegas.

If you are a true seafood lover, then head into Henderson for Easter brunch at Todd's Unique Dining. From 11:30am - 2:30 pm, this primarily seafood restaurant will be serving shrimp cocktail, smoked salmon, crabcakes and a variety of benedicts for your pleasure. Fruit platters and steak skillets will also be available for those that left their sea legs at home.

Looking for something spicier? Check out Border Grill in the Southeast Valley [where: 3950 Las Vegas Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89119] for a brunch of modern Mexican favorites. Choose 3 items from a menu consisting of Santa Fe enchiladas, egg quesadillas and banana french toast, and much more. Wash it all down with Sangria, of course!

Want something more traditional, but still laid back? The Seasons Easter buffet at Silverton Hotel and Casino in the Southwest Valley. Just a few blocks off the Strip, this hotel/casino is much more wallet friendly. It serves traditional, scrumptious brunch options for only $20 per person starting at 11am. Try favorites such as roasted lamb and citrus glazed chicken in addition to basic breakfast items.

For an all out fancy Easter brunch, the place to be is downtown at Bally's Sterling Brunch [where: 3645 Las Vegas Blvd., Las Vegas, NV ]. Although this brunch is served every Sunday from 9:30am - 2:30pm, this Sunday there are sure to be a few special touches. Sip unlimited champagne and feast on gourmet delicacies such as smoked salmon, caviar, lamb chops, beef tenderloin, chocolate covered strawberries, sushi, and, of course, made-to-order omelettes and french toast. Although the price is steep ($58 per person!) it's worth every penny. And, just think, you probably won't eat again for a day or so!

The District at Green Valley Ranch- A Village Within A City

The District at Green Valley Ranch is among the first of the Valley’s growing trend towards shopping/residential communities. Established in April of 2004, The District is home to several popular restaurants like P.F. Chang’s and The Cheesecake Factory, as well as specialty stores like Williams-Sonoma and Sharper Image. Rising above these restaurants and stores are The District’s residential lofts and flats, ranging in size from 875 to 1,750 square feet. The largest entity of The District is Station Casino’s Green Valley Ranch Resort and Spa. Green Valley Ranch offers a large movie theater complex as well as restaurants like The Original Pancake House and bars like Quinn’s Irish Pub.

Being situated in the shadow of Green Valley Ranch gives The District a convenient location for visiting commuters and shoppers. The District is located just off the Green Valley Parkway exit on the I-215 Bruce Woodbury Beltway. This convenient location extends itself not only to those visiting The District but to the actual residents themselves. Green Valley Parkway is located just a few miles west of the I-215/U.S. Highway 95 junction, which provides a southbound route into Henderson and a northbound route into Northwest Las Vegas.

Along with the entertainment at nearby Green Valley Ranch, The District is also neighbor to recreational facilities at Liberty Pointe, which include an outdoor amphitheatre, swimming pools, and basketball courts. On the other side of the I-215 Beltway from The District are several business districts, which are headquarters to valley media giants like Greenspun Media and The Las Vegas Sun.

Potential home buyers of Green Valley not wishing for the loft/flat style home above shopping districts may find more suitable homes near The District inside gated communities like The Estates at Green Valley or the living community also named Green Valley Ranch. With so many options available to shoppers, residents, and casino patrons, it’s no wonder The District has attracted so many followers in the shopping/residential community arena throughout the Valley.

South Las Vegas- Finally Getting Access to All the Action

The recent opening of Town Square on Las Vegas Boulevard is one of many new additions which have brought South Las Vegas into The Strip’s “picture.” For many years, southern access onto Las Vegas Boulevard came via Nevada Highway 604, which is still technically Las Vegas Boulevard. Those entering the valley from the east rather than the south gained access to The Strip via Highway 160, which ultimately becomes Blue Diamond Road. With several miles separating Blue Diamond Road and Russell Road, residents of South Las Vegas were often delayed in accessing Las Vegas Boulevard. The implementation of the I-215 Bruce Woodbury Beltway has assisted both South Las Vegas and Henderson residents in their commute to The Strip. However, residents of both areas who live close to Las Vegas Boulevard are not always facilitated by the I-215 Beltway. The entrances to the I-215 Beltway via Interstate 15 require more travel for these residents than surface streets. The Warm Springs Road overpass provides a convenient alternative for South Las Vegas residents west of Interstate 15 and commuters coming from the highly industrial Dean Martin Drive. Just a couple of miles north, Harmon Ave. will soon provide similar access to Las Vegas Boulevard, right into the forthcoming City Center.

Town Square is the Valley’s newest shopping/residential district. The center includes popular restaurant spots like Claim Jumper and California Pizza Kitchen, as well as Rave Motion Pictures, a California-style mega movie theater. Accommodating to the shoppers’ diverse tastes, Town Square offers stores like Victoria’s Secret as well as Guitar Center. Also provided by Town Square is direct
access onto both Interstate 15 and the I-215 Beltway. This direct access makes Town Square a more attractive alternative for shoppers than The Desert Passage shops inside the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, which are accessible only through the often painstaking Las Vegas Strip traffic. Soon, this traffic will seem all the less discouraging for South Las Vegas residents as they reach The Strip via more convenient alternatives like Harmon Ave. and Warm Springs Road.

MustSeeLasVegas.com- A Traveller's Guide

The Sin City isn’t all sin – in fact, it's home to fantastic cultural attractions where you can have a worldly experience with out ever leaving Las Vegas. Gondola rides, Botanical Gardens, Shark Reefs and famous artwork from the Guggenheim in New York and the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg all sound quite appealing.

Sandwiched between these two major avenues is Oakey Boulevard, a highly residential strip of road extending from Martin Luther King Boulevard to Durango Drive. Oakey Boulevard is home to dozens of residential communities including Scotch 80’s, Spanish Oaks, and Rancho Bonita Estates.

With businesses both big and small occupying Charleston Boulevard and Sahara Avenue, Oakey Boulevard provides a quieter and often less congested route for east/west travelers. While Charleston and Sahara provide restaurants, shopping centers, and even casinos, Oakey provides other alternatives to recreation like Bob Baskin Park and Rainbow Family Park. Oakey Boulevard is also home to several community and educational facilities including Vegas Verdes Elementary School, Opportunity Village, and Bonanza High School.

Being a highly residential street, Oakey Boulevard provides a relatively safe haven for its occupants. Neighborhoods like Scotch 80’s and Spanish Oaks are not directly accessible from Charleston Boulevard or Sahara Avenue; therefore, travelers seeking shortcuts between the two major streets cannot find them within
these communities.

The area of West Sahara Avenue between Rancho Drive and Valley View Boulevard is occupied mainly by business centers and banks. Adjoining this business district are the neighborhoods Rancho Bonita Estates and Spanish Oaks. Residents of these communities are virtually unaffected by commuters because of their gated exclusivity and cul-de-sac abundant neighborhoods. This trend also extends westward between Rainbow Boulevard and Oakey’s stopping point, Durango Drive. Although shorter in length than its commercial neighbors, Oakey Boulevard has, for years, stood as a community symbol and served as an attractive option for homebuyers in central Las Vegas.

Southwest Las Vegas- The Frontage Road Capital of the Valley

For years, Industrial Road has served as a resourceful alternative to the often congested I-15 for northbound/southbound commuters. The road provides
access to many major streets like Flamingo and Tropicana Avenue. At one point, Industrial Road forks and creates Frank Sinatra Way for northbound/southbound commuters east of I-15 and continues to stretch southward on the west side of
I-15. Industrial Road is Las Vegas’ largest “frontage road.”

The I-215 Bruce Woodbury Beltway has encircled the Las Vegas valley for several years. The years of dedication from the Regional Transportation Commission
has brought a convenient, accommodating alternative for Vegas commuters. With community development continuing to expand in the southwest, the I-215
Beltway has expanded as well. Along with the standard exits at each major road, the I-215 Beltway now includes frontage roads that run alongside the freeway
in several of the southwest areas. These frontage roads provide access to the northbound/southbound streets as well as entrances back onto the I-215. With
many shopping centers and business pavilions springing up in the southwest, the frontage roads serve as a simpler, more convenient alternative for would-be shoppers and commuting workers than the often-congested I-215 Beltway.

The frontage roads along the freeway also serve nearby residents in their “quick commutes.” With large communities like Southern Highlands and Mountain’s Edge continuing to expand in the southwest, the need for a sense of direction
becomes more and more apparent. The frontage roads connect with the major northbound/southbound streets. This provides residents and commuters with a safe navigation system to and from their destinations.

As is true with Industrial Road, many large businesses and shopping centers reside alongside these frontage roads. Rather than the more time consuming alternative of an off-ramp to the major street on which these businesses reside, the frontage roads practically bring the commuters to the business’ front door. Then, after all the shopping and working is done, the frontage roads provide these commuters with a clear lane right back onto the I-215 and back into the busy traffic from which the frontage roads provide an escape.

As the different sections of the Las Vegas valley begin to mirror each other more and more, it will not be surprising when these convenient frontage roads start to emerge in the northeast, northwest, and southeast sectors of the I-215 Beltway.

Take A Trip To Lake Mead

A couple of summers ago I rented a house boat on Lake Mead with friends. Las Vegas Blvd extends from Nevada Highway 604 all the way to North Las Vegas. However, that which Las Vegas residents and tourists collectively refer to as “The Strip” comprises roughly the area of Las Vegas Blvd between Sahara Ave and Russell Ave. With land along The Strip selling for eight figures an acre, the most economic alternative for developers is to “build up.”

Over the past eight years, high-rise condos have been constructed in record numbers along The Strip. The largest of these projects is City Center, an MGM Mirage, Inc. development estimated to cost between seven and nine billion dollars. City Center has become such a large project, The Dubai World Group has committed 5.1 billion dollars for half of its purchase, including stock in the MGM.

As Las Vegas Boulevard stretches north, it distances itself from McCarran International Airport. This remoteness allows hotels and condominiums more leeway as far as “building up” is concerned. The intersection of Spring Mountain Rd/Sands Ave and Las Vegas Boulevard is home to some of Vegas’ highest standing structures. The Palazzo, Wynn Las Vegas, and Trump Tower, all located within a block of each other, are the three tallest resorts south of The Stratosphere. North of Spring Mountain Rd / Sands Ave, high rise condominium developments like Turnberry Towers, One Las Vegas, and Sky Las Vegas help stretch Las Vegas Boulevard’s skyline both east and westward.

At the north end of Las Vegas Boulevard’s skyline lies The Stratosphere, Las Vegas’ tallest structure. For years, The Stratosphere has stood aloof from its neighboring Strip properties. However, a nine billion dollar condominium development project is soon to be under construction just north of The Stratosphere. With this current project covering the north end of The Strip and City Center covering the south end, Las Vegas Boulevard is bound to expand that which residents and tourists consider worthy of calling “The Strip.”

I was not very familiar with the UNLV area, but I was familiar with Las Vegas Strip night life and the basic demographics of the city, such as it has more than a million residents living there etc. I graduated from the U of A in Tucson, Arizona and the apartment my roommates and I shared near campus was perfect for a social lifestyle and convenient to restaurants, grocery, gym, and pubs. Therefore an apartment by UNLV should offer the same amenities, right? It has turned out to be much different than I expected.

Well, the scene next to my apartment building in Las Vegas has turned out to be quite different than what I experienced near my pad in Tucson. Though my roommate and found a pretty hip apartment practically on the UNLV campus…there is little campus life. The social life of UNLV seems to have been over shadowed by the Las Vegas Strip social scene.

Though I settled on a spacious apartment off of Maryland Pkwy, there are a plethora of small and large apartment communities near UNLV. My place has a resort style pool, which is a must on the hot summer days in Las Vegas. The UNLV area is blocks from the Boulevard Mall, a Super Target, plenty of movie rental spots, and grocery. Not much in the way of gyms that are walking distance, unless you are a student you can use the one at UNLV.

There are very few college pubs in the area…like maybe five? Most of them are off of Maryland Parkway between Tropicana and Flamingo. Maryland Pkwy runs north and south along the one mile length of UNLV. My hip apartment is right off of Maryland Pkwy so, I can walk to most of the pubs. Unfortunately, there are not enough little college type pubs to do a UNLV pub crawl along Maryland Pkwy, but you could swing a small 5k pub crawl to warm up for a big crawl maybe in Old Town Las Vegas or Freemont Experience area.

There is hope yet for UNLV and it’s campus social scene. There is a revitalization project called Midtown UNLV that was introduced in 2002, but really did not make any headlines until late 2006. Midtown UNLV will be revitalizing the area with more and new hotspots to eat, drink, and hang out. There will also be an expansion to include more apartments, dorms, and living quarters for faculty and students at UNLV. To learn more about the Midtown UNLV revitalization project visit their website at midtown.unlv.edu.

Below is a list of what social bars, pubs, or lounges I found on the UNLV campus in order of preference. I will be writing a blog about each of these hangouts because they are noteworthy and each make for a good time depending on your expectations.
Meet ups include the topics you’d expect like book clubs, photography, knitting, cooking. But it can get a little crazier. How about Salsa in the City on one end of the spectrum and the Las Vegas Sci-Fi and Fantasy Book Club on the other? And if you’re single you should definitely hit up the Las Vegas Millionaire Meetup Group.

You could always go to a casino and sit at a blackjack table. Interesting characters are always roaming around. Your $$ to friend ratio might be a little high though.
Named after Hughes’ grandmother, Jean Amelia Summerlin, the 23,400 acre mega-community has been exploding since construction began on the land in 1990.

Located at the west end of the Las Vegas valley, Summerlin is actually divided into two parts, Summerlin North and Summerlin South. Home to some of the most lavish gated communities in Las Vegas, Summerlin South also includes world renowned golf courses like Bear’s Best, a course designed by golf legend Jack Nicklaus himself. Summerlin North is also home to some of the world’s finer golf courses. TPC (Tournament Players Club) at Summerlin is host to the PGA Tour’s Las Vegas Invitational.

Adhering to Las Vegas’ growing trend of building upward, Summerlin North is the future home of One Queensridge Place, a dual tower, high-rise condominium development located just east of the Suncoast, Summerlin’s second largest hotel/casino.

Soon after development began on Summerlin in 1990, construction began on the Summerlin Parkway, an inter-community, two-lane expressway stretching from Rainbow Boulevard to the I-215 Bruce Woodbury Beltway. With the connection complete between the Summerlin Parkway and the I-215 Beltway, the doors flew open for construction on The Red Rock Station, Summerlin’s largest hotel/casino. Owned by Station Casinos, The Red Rock Station is the most expensive casino/spa/resort located off the Las Vegas Strip.

Just west of the Red Rock Station and the I-215 beltway, Summerlin communities The Paseos and The Vistas draw Las Vegas’ real estate market that much closer to Red Rock Canyon, Nevada’s most famous national park. For years, Charleston Blvd. has served as a link between Las Vegas and Red Rock Canyon. However, before development began on Summerlin in 1990, Charleston stretched several miles, unaccompanied by neither commercial nor residential entities. Today, golfers at Bear’s Best are practically one bad slice away from Red Rock Canyon.

We may never know if Howard Hughes foresaw such a booming community when he purchased those 23,400 acres over half a century ago, but we can take comfort in the fact that his grandmother’s name has been well honored.
