Oakey Boulevard- Las Vegas’ Residential “Strip”

Posted by Kirk McKnight on 3/7/2008 9:24:48 AM in Downtown Las Vegas, Central Las Vegas, neighborhood close-ups

Sahara Avenue and Charleston Boulevard are two of Las Vegas’ largest east/west running streets. Sandwiched between these two major avenues is Oakey Boulevard, a highly residential strip of road extending from Martin Luther King Boulevard to Durango Drive. Oakey Boulevard is home to dozens of residential communities including Scotch 80’s, Spanish Oaks, and Rancho Bonita Estates.

With businesses both big and small occupying Charleston Boulevard and Sahara Avenue, Oakey Boulevard provides a quieter and often less congested route for east/west travelers. While Charleston and Sahara provide restaurants, shopping centers, and even casinos, Oakey provides other alternatives to recreation like Bob Baskin Park and Rainbow Family Park. Oakey Boulevard is also home to several community and educational facilities including Vegas Verdes Elementary School, Opportunity Village, and Bonanza High School.

Being a highly residential street, Oakey Boulevard provides a relatively safe haven for its occupants. Neighborhoods like Scotch 80’s and Spanish Oaks are not directly accessible from Charleston Boulevard or Sahara Avenue; therefore, travelers seeking shortcuts between the two major streets cannot find them within
these communities.

The area of West Sahara Avenue between Rancho Drive and Valley View Boulevard is occupied mainly by business centers and banks. Adjoining this business district are the neighborhoods Rancho Bonita Estates and Spanish Oaks. Residents of these communities are virtually unaffected by commuters because of their gated exclusivity and cul-de-sac abundant neighborhoods. This trend also extends westward between Rainbow Boulevard and Oakey’s stopping point, Durango Drive. Although shorter in length than its commercial neighbors, Oakey Boulevard has, for years, stood as a community symbol and served as an attractive option for homebuyers in central Las Vegas.
