Last week my man and I were in the mood for a nice, yet casual, dinner out on the town, so we headed to Nine75 in the Capitol Hill area. We wanted a place that was new and interesting, minus a menu full of odd fusion concoctions that seem to be so common these days as everyone strives to be as different as possible. Nine75 hit the spot with its funky decor and delicious comfort food offerings.
The hostess led us past a very trendy-looking bar area and down a narrow hallway in the back that held several two-person booths made of black alligator (faux?) leather. Our cozy table was set with tall, curved water glasses and fun plates featuring 50's pin-up vixens and heart tattoo images. The menu wasn't very big, which turned out to be a good thing since we had a hard enough time choosing what to order as it was. The place is known for their so-called "comfort food with a rock n’ roll twist," such as baked macaroni-n-cheese, BBQ coca-cola baby back pork ribs, and meatloaf (I know, meatloaf isn't something most people consume unless their grandmother is shoveling it down their throats, but supposedly this is one of Nine75's specialties).
Our eyes tend to be bigger than our bellies when we go out to eat and we usually order way too much food. Of course, this was no exception. We had a tough time deciding so we just ordered a bit of everything. We munched on steamed edammame while we looked over the menus, then we sipped wine as we split a fabulous caprese-style salad and french onion dip soup. Notice the dip part, this was not a normal french onion soup. It had a huge hunk of crusty french bread sticking out of it and there was shredded meat mixed in with the onions and gooey cheese. I'm not a big onion soup fan but I devoured this concoction. Although we were almost full at this point, we continued to order the kobe beef sliders, which turned out to be a great choice. The sliders consisted of four mini-burgers created with kobe beef patties and warm, soft silver-dollar buns, pickles and onions. The sliders usually come with 3 burg's but since we were splitting them our waitress offered to throw an extra one on there so we didn't have to fight over the last one. They were excellent to say the least.
I need to go back soon if for nothing else but another glass of vino and one of nine75's creative, blast-from-the-past desserts such as cotton candy and "twinkie cake." Unfortunately, this time I was too full to even look at the dessert menu. I left happy with my meal, and glad that Nine75 managed to differentiate itself without ending up too weird in the food area.
