…mixing old and new

When someone says "it can't be done," send them to Lowry.

Once a functional Air Force Base, it's now creating a standard for community living. The idea was to take an existing urban area and incorporate the best aspects of Denver's great old neighborhoods without adding to the problem of urban sprawl—recycle old runways into new roads, move old trees rather than cut them down, refurbish old base housing into lofts and townhomes.

Success! City planners have designed roads that minimize pollution, incorporated technology and resourcefulness, and integrated quiet residential streets with public art, recreational and retail space, and attractions like The Wings Over the Rockies Museum with its historic planes and space vehicles.

So, what's standard issue here? Lots of green. A golf course. Scenic trails and sidewalks. Buildings pre-wired for high-speed Internet. Multiple phone lines and advanced audio and video distribution. Plus, a town center filled with local businesses.

A recent recipient of the Governor's Award for Smart Growth, and now a model for city planning nationwide, Lowry has been on the lips of residents across Denver and beyond.
