Just another Night in Uptown Denver

Completely passed out, I lay in my bed with my snout facing towards the small crack in the window, breathing in the briskly refreshing cold 3:00 am air. I suddenly awoke to a voice.

“Hello,” she said like a foreigner to a new strange land.

Puzzled by this I thought perhaps I was dreaming. This female audible broke through the night’s quiet cold hush. The sound seemed to be in my apartment. Telling myself that I was still dreaming, I coaxed myself to close my eyes and return to sleep.

“Hello,” she repeated drawn out. “Can somebody help me?”

As if I were a super-hero of some sorts I popped out of my bed and jogged to the kitchen window where the audible was the strongest. Pitter patter of high heels echoed between my apartment building and the one adjacent.

“Hello?” she said with a fearful tone. “Can somebody help me?”

My mind began to race as if I were still in a dream state. What was this girl/lady distressed for? Is she running from something or someone? Is she lost? Or worse, is she hurt?

Hastily throwing on some shorts, I started to move towards the front door to got to the balcony to be of some assistance. I then heard another voice. This time it was a male voice.

“Hey. What’s wrong, do you need help?” he said with a super-hero tone.

“Where are you?” she said timidly. “Hello,” the female voice said drawn out again.

I decided to let the other super-hero handle this one while I stayed perched at the window waiting for the climax. And then it went silent. No more distress, no more audibles.

Perhaps as quickly as it began it ended with no climax. As I shuffled back to my bed in hope that everything was alright and the super-hero completed the task, the voice appeared again.

“Hello?”

I decided to wait it out and listen. The voice continued until someone let them into my apartment building where a concerned dialogue took place.

“You’re not going back out there,” the new concerned voice said as a loud door slam echoed through the building.

Periodically I would hear a heated discussion as I dwindled back to sleep. The mystery never solved. The voice never appeared and it was just another brisk cold night in Uptown Denver.
