Once upon a time, Stapleton was an airport. It was an airport way back when the innovative concept of ‘mixed-use’ was something akin to a pencil with an eraser on top, not a buzz word for urban development where you can work, live and play. In fact, Stapleton was an airport way back when I only thought it took a long time to get to the airport.
Until recently though, a remaining bit of Stapleton International Airport’s history was threatened with the proposed demolition of Hanger 61. No buyer could be found until Colorado Preservation was able to land a grant from the Colorado Historical Society’s State Historical Fund to cover the $194,825 purchase price.
It is kind of sad when a “great example of 1950s aviation architecture” almost passes into oblivion because no one can scrape up $195k. The historic building comes with 9,000 square feet of usable space and 1.241 acres of land located at Central Park Boulevard and 21st Avenue. I know it needs a lot of work, which means money, but seriously, you can’t find a shoebox to live in for $195k.
The good news is that the Hanger will be redeveloped for commercial use, landscaped and a 4,500 square foot mezzanine will be added. The building will add history and character to the Stapleton neighborhood, who's history dates back to 2001.
