After playing a quick nine holes, we dropped into Citron New World Bistro, a new Mediterranean restaurant near Kennedy Golf Course in the Hampden Heights-Southmoor neighborhood Citron Bistro is housed [where: 3535 South Yosemite, Denver CO 80237] in what used to be a Marie Callender’s – but you’d never know it. Co-owner, Tom Karas, did a great job revamping the place. And the food and wine is great!
I’m particularly fond of appetizers because it’s more interesting to eat that way – you get to try so many more flavors. Citron certainly has some unique offerings that I would recommend. Try the baked feta cheese with warm pita sections. The cheese is softened in the oven, topped with thyme, some roasted tomatoes, garlic and olives with a little olive oil. Spread that, pile on and insert in mouth – yum!
The Greek shrimp are accompanied with sautéed onions, garlic and tomatoes and are great alongside the baked feta. We also tried the shrimp tacos (I know, shrimp twice? It was worth it!) and that was a standout for the avocado and shrimp mixture that was accompanied by enough heat to make a nice impression, particularly when eaten on the warm salty chips that came with.
Finally, try some mussels. Mussels are an old favorite and if you love them, they’re well worth trying here. There are so many other things on the menu, too, so you’re sure to find something terrific.
The food is reasonably priced and there’s a good wine list so watch for specials on the patio and certain nights of the week. You can call them at 303-771-5800 to find out what’s going on any night of the week.
You’ll enjoy Citron New World Bistro if you enjoy Mediterranean flavors - and Citron is a great addition to the neighborhood!
