If you ever drive down Santa Fe, where it runs through the Arts District, you will be familiar with the yellow building on the corner of 7th and Santa Fe. El Taco de Mexico is one of those places you might think is just another hole in the wall, but you will be very disappointed if you don’t stop in. You’ll notice they have a fairly large parking lot, especially for a hole in the wall, and that’s because they need it. The place is always packed.
What I like about the breakfast burritos at El Taco de Mexico is the rice. Not every BB has rice and it’s just key. Rice, beans, potatoes, chorizo, eggs, smothered, of course. I don't recommend it with the optional salsa and onions – though it doesn't make it too spicy, it takes away from the flavor of everything else. Keep it simple.
The menu, posted on the wall above a bar lined with stools, stretches from one side of the room to the other and there are lots of options – however, I have only had the breakfast burrito, because it is just too good to not order.
The portions are large and one burrito is definitely enough for two people who plan on partaking in reasonable consumption.
Whether you dine in or take out, you order at the bar and you pay when you are finished eating or leaving. The staff is friendly, reserved and very accommodating, so make sure to leave a tip. I prefer getting the food to go, mostly because it is a very small restaurant and the smell of food cooking can be a little overbearing. Be sure to safely secure your to-go bag in your car, because gravity can easily topple over the pounds (huge portions) of affordable and tasty food.
