The Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum, located in Golden, CO, is the first museum in the US dedicated to mountaineering. The museum’s goal is to ‘educate the visitor about mountaineering, how and why mountaineers climb, and the mountains themselves.’
The museum features interactive exhibits on all aspects that pertain to climbing – including climbing history, heroes of the sport, conservation, safety and mountain cultures.
Here are some fun stats gathered from the BW Mountaineering Museum blog – it makes be a small museum but there is a lot going on:
7500 tons of structures, interactive kiosks, and graphic panels in the museum (not including the rock formations)
1700 man-hours (over 5 weeks) to complete installation
246 light bulbs, most of which are metal halide lamps, lowering electricity consumption by approximately 65%
2 tractor trailer trucks it took to haul all of the materials and displays from Quatrefoil Associates headquarters in Laurel, Maryland
1.4 millions dollars, budgeted for the design and build of the museum
The museum is brand new – opening its doors in February of this year. Check their schedule for lectures and new exhibits. Admission is $6.50 for adults and $4.50 for children.
