…Rocky Mountain-rugged with a west-coast mentality

You're driving north from Denver. You're not quite sure how long you've been driving—maybe 45 minutes?—and you seem to have missed your turn. You begin to notice something a little different about the passers-by. Their hair is longer and more, uh, "whimsical." They wear hemp and tie-dye as if that alone could save the planet. And the air smells of patchouli and like Uncle Harry after he took a long walk. Where on earth are you?

Relax! It could only be Boulder, Colorado! Also known as "The Republic of Boulder" and "The Bubble."

Long before homeowners, hippies and CU (University of Colorado) students moved in, this area near the Flatirons and Boulder Canyon was home primarily to the Southern Arapaho Indian tribe, followed by gold-seekers in 1858.

There's always something interesting going on in laid-back Boulder whether it's year-round art festivities, The Bolder Boulder race or Kinetics at the Boulder Reservoir. You also might meet someone who studies holistic healing at Naropa University. And just to give you insight into Boulderites' green thinking, the city adopted the Kyoto Protocol, an international treaty to reduce greenhouse gases.
