I tend to relate a book club to a bridge club, something for older women to partake in to get away from their husbands and children and the banal demands of the household. However, yesterday I found myself at the first meeting of a book club created by a 22 year old, and everyone in attendance was a twenty-something female. It was anything but dull! After downing two rounds of home-made margaritas and devouring a bowl of queso the word 'book' had yet to be mentioned. The conversation was more focused on the romance (or the lack thereof) and workplace drama, but not literature. In fact, of the whole two hours I was there only briefly did we talk about books--just long enough to choose one to read for the next meeting. I realized a book club is really more like a stich-n-bitch, just an excuse to get together with friends who have a similar interest to do what girls like to do best: Talk! I only knew a few of the girls, but it was surprisingly therapeutic to talk to relative strangers about what's going on in their lives. Not only was it good to meet new friends, but I'm always interested in other peoples' take on things. Although I look forward to all the great books I will be introduced to by this group, I'm more excited to try out new recipes on the girls, and to talk, talk, talk......
