Oak Cliff

…new park, lush lawns and an eye on the arts

For those who live here, “the Cliff” is a lush locale, a place of legends and a quick commute. No need to program the GPS, because it's conveniently located southwest of Dallas’ Downtown, just south of the Trinity River and west of I-35E.

In recent years, it’s been shedding its 1970s rep of higher crime and low-income housing, and has gotten a boost from young professionals interested in the mid-20th century houses and Oak Cliff luxury apartments, a great school system and light traffic.

Yet Oak Cliff is much more than a revitalized neighborhood—though its notoriety as the birthplace of Stevie Ray Vaughan, T-Bone Walker’s stomping grounds, the original home to the 7-11 and the place where Clyde Barrow met Bonnie Parker, are impressive enough.

This 300,000-person city includes a 150-acre park with a two-mile long lake, an event pavilion, community groups that help maintain the beauty of the area and the Bishop Arts District, a distinct art and nightlife center in the northern part of town. The independent Cockrell Hill and Winnetka Heights serve as upper-middle class enclaves.
