South Dallas…will rise again—someday

South Dallas, a compelling area dotted with stunning examples of art deco architecture within the historic 277-acre Fair Park complex, also houses the famous State Fair of Texas, nine museums, six performance spaces and a lagoon, among other attractions.

South Dallas is home to practically half the population in all of Dallas, as well as the Cotton Bowl, the Smirnoff Music Centre and the infamous, 49-foot Big Tex (don’t worry—it’s just a statue). It definitely has personality. But it's challenged.

In other words, South Dallas has seen better days. It was developed as a middle-class neighborhood in the 1870s, grew to elite Victorian-mansion status by the 1900s, and has been on a slippery slope since the 1920s.

Yet there's always hope. We're thinking South Dallas is due for a renaissance, and recent factors point to one soon. New developments like townhomes, urban lofts on Lamar and the spiffy DART Cedars Station suggest a promising, hopeful future. South Dallas apartments are plentiful and they're attracting the urban pioneers who love funky-artsy neighborhoods like this.

Looks like the not-so-little South Dallas has growing pains again.

Another great way to stay cool and entertained this summer is to catch a show at the Fair Park Music Hall in Dallas. The Dallas Summer Musical season goes through October, so there’s still time to get tickets!
