Manitou Springs article in the NYT

The New York Times featured an article on Manitou Springs, calling out the 'hippie Mayberry' nickname Manitou has received over time due to Manitou’s diverse history that includes Indian tribes, a tuberculosis treatment center and a ‘1960’s hippie haven.’

NYT writer, Andy Newman, says, “Manitou is also defined by what it is not — its neighbor Colorado Springs, a sprawling, chain-stored center of conservative evangelical Christianity looming just beyond the Garden of the Gods, a 1,300 acre array of Gaudíesque red-rock formations that acts as a sort of buffer between the towns.”

As locals know and the Times points out, the best way to see Manitou is on foot whether it be exploring the town’s shops and restaurants the bordering mountain.

The article also introduces some of Manitou's locals, including Maria McGill, who runs the Dulcimer Shop (719-685-9655, 740 Manitou Ave, Manitou Springs, CO 80829) and Jack John, owner of Patsy's of Manitou Springs (719-685-9437, 930 Manitou Ave, Manitou Springs CO, 80829.) Though Manitou residents sound just a touch 'off' at times (very superstitious), overall, it's a nice article. However, many people don’t think Manitou needs anymore tourists. Perhaps the article will inspire a few interested souls to ‘break down’ in Manitou like McGill did, and set up shop indefinitely.
